John Callcott Horsley received his education in art at two of England’s prestigious academies, one of them the Royal Academy. He was commissioned by The Houses of Parliament to paint two frescoes: “The Spirit of Religion” in 1847 and “Satan Wounded by Ithuriel’s Lance” in 1848. Horsley had earned the nickname “Clothes Horsley” due to his disapproval of the study and painting of the naked human form.
