Dean grew up in Quincy Florida. Dean actually spent some childhood and teen summers working on farms. Nothing inspires a person to decide to get an education like working outside in the hot south summer sun. You either take to it or not.

Early work at Hallmark Cards but illustration wasn\'t his goal, Mitchell wanted to do gallery work dealing with the human condition. He started to work immediately on gallery work. He self published his own book at a time when that simply was not done. This book helped stabilize his reputation as well as his drive to market himself. He has been featured in several publications including the New York Times, American Artist, Artist Magazine, Fine Art International, and Art News.
