1. Diplomat

1.1. It is the president's job to decide what direction American foreign policy will head in and then to play a role in carrying it out. Sometimes, this requires in person meetings with the leaders of other countries.

2. Chief executive

2.1. The president is responsible for all the programs within the executive branch. He sets the overall policy for the executive departments and acts as the chief administrator.

3. Legislator

3.1. The president proposes legislation and sees it through until it becomes law. He/she works with Congressional leaders through this process.

4. Party leader

4.1. The president is the "titular head" of his/her respective political party. This means that he/she is supposed to fundraise for the party and support their platform, as well as other things.

5. Commander in Chief

5.1. As the highest-ranking officer in the armed services, the president is in charge of sending American forces around the world as part of American foreign policy.

6. Chief of State

6.1. This is the president's most obvious function. It is largely ceremonial (i.e. opening the Olympic Games, welcoming athletes to the White House), but makes an important state about the president's role as leader.

7. Moral leader

7.1. The president is supposed to set the moral tone for the entire country. This includes honesty, integrity, and faith in religion.
