1. Interim/Benchmark

1.1. Definition: A form of assessment where teachers may evaluate students during their learning process to ensure they are on the right track to perform and master future assessments.

1.2. Example: Running Records and Standardized Testing

2. Summative

2.1. Definition: An assessment used to evaluate student learning, skills, and academic achievement. It is a formal assessment with high stakes, given at the end of a unit.

2.2. Examples: End of Unit Test and Midterms

3. Performance

3.1. Definition: This is sometimes referred to as "authentic assessments." It is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.

3.2. Example: Portfolios, Journals, and Demonstrations

4. Diagnostic

4.1. Definition: A form of assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction and help a teacher see if their are any gaps in learning. They help teachers plan future lessons and differentiation prior to an instructional lesson.

4.2. Examples: Pre- Assessments and Surveys

5. Formative

5.1. Definition: Process of assessment (informal) where teachers conduct assessments during the learning process in order to modify/reteach lessons to improve student mastery.
