The 4 Essential Components of Family Literacy
by Dominique Whitehead
1. Parent and Child Together Time ( PACT) : Parents and Child together time help parents view how vital of a role they play as the primary teacher of their children. It creates a sense of security for the child as well as strengthens the learning relationship between parent and child. This time is essential for parents to understand how important their role as an advocate for their child’s education really is.
2. Parent Time: Parent education parenting classes help provide parents with the resources necessary on how to become a well rounded parent regarding their child's education. They are given the opportunity to share concerns with trained instructors and/or their peers. This component helps parents learn effective parenting strategies and how valuable they are in their child’s education as well as further equip them to solve problems and work through day-to-day challenges.
3. Adult Education: This component is essential because it helps raise the education level of parents while helping them gain motivation, knowledge, and skills needed to get a job or fulfill a personal academic goal to better themselves educationally. Parents will have a better understanding and feel more confident in aiding their children in their education.
4. Children's Education: This component will include and develop the involvement of the parent. The social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills evolve through support from their peers and adults and interaction. Age appropriate services follow similar guidelines as other quality educational programs for children in pre-k through high school. Children learn and explore through activities and the support from adults they are surrounded by daily.
