Induction Process by Mind Map: Induction Process

1. Inquiry Question: How can I improve my approaching ELL students oral discourse and writing to increase EL’s language proficiency close reading strategies ?

1.1. Form ideas clearly and use evidence to support the ideas

1.1.1. Strategies Implemented: Close Reading, Notices and Notes

1.1.1.1. Impact on Student Learning: Most students were able to find and cite evidence Some students were able to explain the character’s motivation Most students were working independently and engaged with the task

1.1.1.2. Evidence from Students’ Work: Students show a general understanding by explaining key explicit and inferred ideas from the text; their ideas are clear and accurate. She cite specific and relevant text evidence to support their ideas. The evidence is appropriate. Students can use the author’s ideas and their own explanation in a balanced way.

1.1.1.2.1. Impact on Teaching: Provided scaffolded support in small groups to support understanding of how to apply strategy Using real life examples so students make connections to what are learning Organizing the steps/directions and posting it visually Providing 1:1 support during independent practice

1.2. Positives/Challenges of Inquiry Cycle: Book Club unit for the first time was understanding the scope and sequence of the different components. I revised my unit with input from my mentor who supported me understanding how to organize the lesson components. Time - the unit was implemented during two week long breaks, which interrupted the momentum of learning; required more time to review before moving forward in the unit Weekly digital reading response journals was not easily accessible for students Supporting English learners and other approaching standards students to elaborate on their oral and written responses Finding shorter texts and scenarios for modeling during reading strategies mini-lessons

2. Reflection of Induction Journey

2.1. Successes: Ability to understand individual students’ needs Teaching in small groups Cueing students to increase engagement and minimize negative behaviors Team Task

2.2. Challenges: To learn and implement new strategies quickly Ability to adapt and take risk

2.3. Next Steps: I would like explore learn, and practice new strategies to support English learner and all students to elaborate on their oral and written responses (e.g., using sentence frames, fishbowl discussions). I would like to curate shorter texts and scenarios to use for modeling during reading strategies mini-lessons

2.4. Advice for year 1 teacher Trust your mentor Be willing to take risk

2.5. My big takeaway from induction process is be open to the experts and always have the end in mind and reflect on the process.
