1. The Mr. Mabiliran Phishing Incident

1.1. Mr. Malibiran opened a payroll account in his name at Union Bank Aurora-Balete Drive branch in July 2013 with the help of Akinto Marketing Corporation.

1.2. He used the original PIN supplied by the bank to check on his balance online via the website of the Union Bank but he never made a withdrawal online.

1.3. The website rejected his PIN and later, he found out that there were unauthorized transactions in his account. He has lost a total of Php159,000

2. Is online banking still safe?

2.1. Online Banking is indeed helpful and convenient for people but at the same time it poses a lot of risks. One of the reasons is Phishing

2.2. Phishing attacks are more rampant than ever before, rising by more than 162 percent from 2010 to 2014. They cost organizations around the globe $4.5 billion every year and over half of internet users get at least one phishing email per day.

3. How do we prevent Phishing?

3.1. We could do this by learning how their scams work, being skeptical of the things we see online, and by being responsible and mature enough as digital citizens.

4. What is it?

4.1. It is an ACT of obtaining INFORMATION from USERS

4.2. It is usually in a form of a TEXT MESSAGE or an E-MAIN

4.3. It contains a misleading text asking for your PERSONAL INFORMATION or contains links or attachments that when downloaded, will install viruses

5. How do you know if you're being PHISHED?

5.1. There are several indicators:

5.1.1. Suspicious Names and/or E-mail Address

5.1.2. Suspicious Links / Malicious Attachments

5.1.3. Messages asking for your Personal Credentials
