Chapter 2: Quadratics
by Aries Allison
1. Linear Equation: an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph. Example: A cab company charges a $3 boarding rate in addition to its meter which is $½ for every mile.
2. Solution set: the set of all the solutions of an equation or condition. Example: Y=2x-2 { (0,-2)(3,4)(-3,8)(2,2) }
3. Transformations: a general term for four specific ways to manipulate the shape of a point, a line, or shape Example: Bagels and mini bagels.
4. X intercept: the x-coordinate of a point where a line, curve, or surface intersects the x-axis. Example: Change in Distance over change in time
5. Quadratic Function: A quadratic function is one of the form f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c Example: determining a product's profit
6. Minimum Value: The lowest value. Example the minimum in a board game is 2 players.
7. zero of a function: a "zero" of a function is an input value that produces an output. Example:
8. Trinomial: an algebraic expression with three terms. Example: x^2 − 2x − 15
9. binomial: an algebraic expression of the sum or the difference of two terms. Example: 5x+3y
10. Maximum: the highest value of something. Example a board game that you cant have more than 4 players.
11. Parabola: a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side. Example: The saint louis Arch
12. Vertex of a parabola: The highest or lowest point of the parabola. Example: The very top of the saint louis arch
13. Axis of symmetry: The axis of symmetry of a parabola is a vertical line that divides the parabola into two congruent halves. Example:
14. Standard form: a way of writing down very large or very small numbers easily. Example: 10^3 = 1000
15. Vertex form: f (x) = a(x - h)^2 + k, where (h, k) is the vertex of the parabola. Example: y = 2x^2 - 4x + 5
16. 67y
