US History II Lessons Learned

1.1. People are in big trouble when they are in dept because when the stock crashes then they are screwed.

2. ***Economics:*** How has economics impacted America & Americans?

2.1. 1920's working class

2.1.1. Immigrants were taking a lot of the factory jobs. Wages went up and time went down. when wages go up and time goes down, that gives people more time and a better life.

2.2. Causes of the Depression: Farm forclosure rate, stock market crashed, dust bowl.

2.3. As a capitalist country we want strong trading partners.

3. ***Migration*** What causes migration and how has it impacted America?

3.1. African Americans moved from the South to the North because of racism and hate groups like the KKK.

3.1.1. The Great migration

4. ***Leaders & Presidents*** What makes an effective or ineffective leader?

4.1. President Harding was a likable man that tried to please everybody but he died half way through his presidency.

4.1.1. MAIN

4.1.1.1. When leaders focus too much on MAIN, it destabilizes world piece.

4.2. The people liked FDR a lot more than Hoover. FDR was a very popular person and they believed in him to get them out of the depression. People thought Hoover was a bad president.

4.3. Vietnam: President Nixon said that he was going to get America out of the Vietnam war. He had his idea of vietnamization, which ended up being a failure. In 1973, the Paris Peace agreement is signed. North Vietnam and America knew that they were not actually going to follow through with the agreement because North Vietnam knew that now that America had left the country, they would not return because of all of the protests in America. On April 30, 1975, North Vietnam attacked and took over South Vietnam. It is a complete disaster because the south was defenseless against South Vietnam. The remaining Americans in Vietnam frantically tried to get civilians out of Vietnam. They even ended up having to push millions of dollars worth of military equipment into the water so that they could make room for people. Their goal of containing communism had not been accomplished and America was left embarrassed. The lesson that America can learn from the end of the Vietnam war is that they need to make a better game plan on how to get out of situations such as Vietnam. We can't know that the North is going to end up eventually taking over South Vietnam and then be unprepared and surprised when it happens.

5. ***Government:*** What is the role and responsibility of the American government?

5.1. Prohibition

5.1.1. The government spent a lot of money on the prohibition and the prohibition was a failure.

5.2. FDR introdused programs like the NRA, CCC, and other things to give people jobs and money

5.3. Vietnam: The American government lied to their citizens a lot during this war. For example, president Nixon had his plan of vietnamization which was an idea to get the U.S. troops out of Vietnam and get the South Vietnamese soldiers to fight the Vietcong and to also bomb a bunch of enemy Vietcong. president Nixon's tactics fail miserably, but even though it didn't work he still lied to American citizens and told them that it was a successful operation. Because of this lie and many other lies made by the government during the Vietnam war, American citizens started to greatly lose trust in the American government. Even today the number citizens that actually trust their government is tremendously lower then before the Vietnam war. The lesson that the American government was taught is that they can not lie too their citizens because without citizen's trust, America will have a lot more trouble.

6. Red Scare Lesson learned

6.1. Media and technology greatly spread hysteria and fear throughout a nation

6.2. influential leaders can easily spread fear and hysteria to get what they want.

7. Containment

7.1. America could not contain Communism in China and Korea and America still fights communism to this day.

8. ***Civil Rights:*** To what extent have the oppressed in America been able to attain an equality of life?

9. ***Technology*** How does technology impact society?

9.1. Radio

9.1.1. The radio made it easier for people to communicate with each other. They also allowed for people to know information faster.

9.2. World war 1 warfare

9.2.1. when there is a lot of new technology in society, we will be ill prepared for war.

9.3. technology can help spread hysteria. (Red Scare)

9.4. Vietnam: During the Vietnam war America used many technologies for war. They used things like napalm which was a gasoline based bomb to burn jungles, agent orange which was a toxic chemical that killed leaves in the jungle and it was later learned that it caused cancer, and we used many many bombs in things like rolling thunder. The technology we used during the Vietnam war was the reason for many innocent deaths. The stupid amount of bombs that Nixon sent to attack Vietnam killed many innocent Vietnamese citizens. The agent orange on the other hand killed many innocent Vietnamese citizens and American soldiers later down the line by giving them cancer. The lesson learned by America is that we can not use these technologies to harm civilians, especially in a war that nobody cares for.

10. ***Media*** To what extent does the media influence people? To what extent does the media mirror or reflect society?

10.1. The media influenced American Civilians to be pro-war when America was trying to stay neutral. A lot of people listen to the media. Radios made it easier for media to get a voice.

10.2. Media can greatly help spread hysteria and fear throughout the nation. TV can have a huge impact at a national level. (Red Scare)

11. ***Foreign Relations*** How have foreign entanglements influence America?

11.1. world war 1

11.1.1. when the U.S is involved in world affairs to a large extent. It is hard to stay neutral if a major conflict breaks out.

11.2. Vietnam: The American Government was planning to get into a war with Vietnam well before the Vietnam war happened. When the war started, the president and the U.S. soldiers knew that they were fighting against communism but really didn't understand how fighting in this random, poor country was gonna help contain communism. People felt very discouraged to fight and the soldiers and American citizens were mad that soldiers were being sent to fight and die for no reason. America isn't going to accomplish anything when its military isn't even on its side.We learned that we can not go into a war unless we have a reason because then we are fighting a war for no reason and nobody wants us to fight

11.3. Vietnam: After the war started, American citizens began to see the war as a bad thing. The Doves and the Hippies were people that saw the war as an unnecessary thing for America to be in. They believed in peace and they saw the war as more of a civil war than a war against communism. They didn't believe that the war was morally correct and they rose up to protest against the war. As the war went on, more Americans began to lose trust in the war and they too began to protest. The government no longer had support from their own citizens, but the president and the rest of the government still continued the war. The lesson that America learned is that without the support of the citizens, we can not go into a war and continue losing American lives when we don't believe in the war.

12.1. leaders make more radical decisions when they are in a great depression (such as Hitler)

12.2. when the great depression happened, America isolated itself which caused problems in other places and is a cause of ww2. we did not have any foreign relations.

12.3. Government

12.3.1. Many people thought the U.S. would be the best place to go, but America was very hesitant to allow everything occurring into their country so Jewish people were stuck.
