Functions of the Family

1. Socialization

1.1. Teaches its member socially acceptable behavior through interaction

2.1. Provides both formal and informal types of education to members. Members are taught informal education prior to entering the education system.

3. Emotional/Safety and Security

3.1. Provides a sense of safety and security for member. It is through the family that build self esteem and develop their self concept.

4. Procreation/Reproduction

4.1. Adds members to society

5. Cultural Transmission

5.1. Passes on cultural beliefs, norms, values and mores to its members.

6. Economic/Financial

6.1. Provides members with basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter.
