2. Vietnam

2.1. Gulf of Tonkin

2.1.1. The US had about 16,000 military troops up near/in Vietnam in 1963. But August 2nd, 1964 one of their ships, the U.S.S Maddox, was attacked but the US failed to do anything after they reported it. The ship was then supposedly attacked again on August 4th, but later that was proven to be false. No one was really sure of what happened, but the military started to attack Vietnam and sent torpedoes through the water.

2.1.1.1. The US went to war under false pretenses because they had done nothing while they were attacked, but bombed the country when they hadn't been. We also know that there may had been some plans to go to war with Vietnam before being attacked in August, which led many to believe that the US had just looked for any small reason to go to war.

2.2. Weapons Used

2.2.1. The weapons used in Vietnam started out with a plan called Rolling Thunder, which was the idea of bombing the enemy until they give in and give up the war. The US may have bombed many big army bases, but they also bombed a lot of city's and towns that many civilians, mostly women, children, and the elderly lived in. Which lost the support of many Americans. After all the bombing, NVA (the North Vietnamese Army) and Vietcong (VC) were still standing, which also lowered a lot of Americans hopes for a short war.

2.2.1.1. Being the big power they are in the world, the US considered that it may be an easy war, and one that they would barley have to fight. But they underestimated how powerful the North Vietnamese army really was. They had the support of many big countries backing them up. So the US had to send in more and more people and supplies to support the South Vietnamese army. Lea

2.3. Entering the War

2.3.1. The Containment of Communism was still a big topic in the US during that time, and the idea of Vietnam falling to communism and it spreading was not a good one to America. And if the US could do something about it they would. So they went and sent advisers, troops and some supplies to the South Vietnamese army. They later got so involved as to they picked their leader to be someone who supported them.

2.3.1.1. Leaving the US right in the middle of a war that most of the country doesn't even support

2.4. Moral

2.4.1. The support for the war, both in the US and in the troops in Vietnam dwindled tremendously over the course of the war. In 1968, 60% of people did not support the war and are making an effort to stop it. They held protests around America and even protested in Washington. Even Vietnam vets didn't support the war, and would speak about how harsh and grueling it was to be there. Over in Vietnam the moral was low. Nobody wanted to fight anymore, and nobody even knew why they were fighting Vietnam's war in the first place. Some men even attacked a small village in Vietnam, full of women and children because they had lost their support for the war. This only helped the fight to end the war because people at home knew that that wasn't the behavior they had ever seen from US soldiers before, and they began to say that it was because of the war, and how long it had been.

2.4.1.1. America continued to go through with the war, even if more than half of the country wasn't supporting it. Many men were forced into the military and were sent to the war without any passion to fight. Coming hoe from the war, the men were never the same. They had either lost some bpdy part, or they had suffered some type fo mental truama that has left them scared. The men were not given a warm welcome like past veterans had. They came home and were left without any cheers and high hopes. They had come home to a divided America. We then learned that without any support from the their own citizens, and without the willingness to fight, the US could not win the war.

2.5. President and Government Lies/ Vietnamization

2.5.1. President Nixon realized that the war was getting too much for America to handle, because it was tearing the country apart. So Nixon came up with a plan to take out US soldiers and replace them with South Vietnamese soldiers. He called this plan Vietnamization. He then planned to send South Vietnam soldiers into Cambodia, because US soldiers weren't allowed. But when they got there, the South was over powered by the North. Instead of telling the truth to the public, the government lied about the success of the attack. The public later found out the truth via the news and media.

2.5.1.1. Because of all the lies that the Government had told America, they no longer trusted the government. And since then we have seen a decrease in trust and belief that our government is doing what is right for us, as a nation. Because this is the first war that there had been news reporters and cameras on the field, it was harder to get away with things. The government has lied to the US in the past, but now we are able to see what the truth is from the footage of the war.
