Chapter 6: Properties and Attributes of Functions by Mind Map: Chapter 6: Properties and Attributes of Functions

1. Piecewise function: A function that is a combination of one or more functions.

2. Step function: A function that increases or decreases abruptly from one constant to another, creating a ladder- type image.

3. Horizontal Line Test is where a horizontal line is used to determine if a line is a function.

3.1. A vertical line test is the same but with a vertical line.

4. Functions are used to describe relationships over time.

4.1. Functions can be used to compare rates of change.

5. Functions can be shown in graphs, tables, equations, or as verbal descriptions.

5.1. Tables are used to look for patterns and is used to determine which parent function the data supports. Tables are also used to put the function into a graph.

5.2. Graphs are used to write an equation from the parent function. The min, max, and intercepts are taken from the graph and used to create the equation.

5.3. Equations use the information from the table to create a graph, or vise versa.

6. Transforming functions is where the function is moved around the graph.
