1. Formative

1.1. The process of gathering data that shows student learning.

1.1.1. A unit pretest to give the teacher feedback on student's prior knowledge and to help adjust teacher instruction.

2. Interim/Benchmark

2.1. A formal assessment that gives the teacher periodic feedback throughout the year.

2.1.1. Report card testing in Kindergarten. This type of assessment tests student growth in all areas of kinder learning. The data from this assessment helps the teacher make decisions for intervention, RTI, GT, SpEd testing and so on.

3. Summative

3.1. A formal assessment that reviews what students have mastered after a large amount of learning.

3.1.1. End of a unit assessment that measures the amount of student growth per unit.

4. Performance

4.1. An assessment that guides students learning throughout instruction.

4.1.1. Homework and class projects are considered performance based because the information is taught, then assessed at low stakes.

5. Diagnostic

5.1. An assessment that gathers data to show student achievement gaps and student ability. The data can be used for identifying student placement grouping.

5.1.1. MAP testing is used to map student achievement gaps/ability and later the data is analyzed to identify which students need intervention.
