1. imperialism
1.1. Policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, socially, and economically
1.2. European countries fought to gain control of Africa and parts of Asia
1.3. They wanted the raw materials these areas could provide.
1.4. This also increased the competition between European countries to establish thew greatest empires
2. Nationalism
2.1. Doctrine that ones national culture and interests are superior to any other and the peoples willingness to sacrifice for it
2.2. Slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer wanted to be part of Austria Hungary but instead be part of Serbia
2.3. In June 1914, a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and his wife while they were in Sarajevo, Bosnia which was part of Austria-Hungary
