1. Classroom Instruction and Student Achievement

1.1. Teaching requires effective preparation, strong content and pedagogical knowledge, informed decision-making, professional judgement, and the ability to adapt to student learning needs. Preparation, practical practice, mentoring, support, time, reflection, professional dispositions are all necessary for making informed instructional decisions.

1.1.1. The topic of planning, providing, and reflecting on quality classroom instruction for all students is key for student learning. High quality, effective teaching has been proved to be the best predictor of student achievement.

2. Learning Goals

2.1. Students need to have clear learning or academic goals. A learning goal is a statement of what students will understand/know or be able to do.

2.1.1. Learning goals should be stated in clear, concise terms, covering an activity, lesson or unit of what students will understand and what they will be able to do as a result of instruction.

3. Rigorous Instruction

3.1. What rigor does is implement an increase of credit based graduation requirements.

3.2. Rigor is not a characteristic of a text; instead, it is a characteristic of one's behavior, interactions, attention given to, and engagement with, that text.

4. Rigorous Instruction and Transfer of Learning

4.1. Rigor is creating an environment in which each student is learning at high levels. Part of it is encouraging students to take on the challenges associated with the standards and to not get discouraged when performance gaps occur.

4.2. Rigorous instructions and learning involves getting students to think differently about what they study and learn, to challenge themselves, to be active and reflective participants in the learning process with the teacher playing the role of the facilitator and mentor instead of the sole dispenser of knowledge.

4.2.1. Comfort with the unexpected will not just help students in the classroom; it will also prepare them for the uncertainties of summative assessments, college, and career, and workforce life. Rigorous instruction and learning should also prepare students to deal with the unexpected.

5. Rigorous Reading

5.1. Rigorous reading should involve asking questions about the text, making inferences, expressing responses, discussing and dissecting with other text structures, meaning, author choices, and messages, identifying similarities and differences, debating and evaluating different interpretations of the text.

6. Benefits on Rigorous Instruction

6.1. A curriculum that reflects rigor is focused, relevant, coherent, and appropriately challenging. Rigor is not more standards, rigid standards, holding students accountable for the same level of learning, giving students more homework, or offering them hard and inflexible learning.

6.2. Rigor is a trait of active thinkers and doers. In rigorous classrooms, there are high expectations for all: teachers and students. In such learning environments, teachers ask students to recall what they know and give them opportunities to apply it to solve a new problem; students are engaged in thinking and are given time to think independently and collaboratively.

6.2.1. The goal of rigorous instruction is to help students develop the capacity to understand content that is complex and personally or emotionally challenging.

6.2.2. Rigorous instruction teaches students how to reflect on the learning process, use learning tools to recover meaning when it is lost, persist when learning is vague or frustrating and solutions cannot be achieved easily, and to know when they are learning or not.

7. What is the first step of planning rigorous instruction? Plan with the end in mind!

7.1. Instruction that promotes academic rigor engages students in the complex, relevant and meaningful tasks that focus on developing deep knowledge of core concepts within each discipline. It requires critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. Rigorous instruction uses worthy texts and includes research projects, problem solving, essays, collaborative work, and oral presentations that enable students to develop and demonstrate abilities to find and organize information, frame and conduct investigations, analyze and synthesize data, apply learning to new situations, and evaluate their work.
