Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theoretical Framework - Theory of Human Motivation by Mind Map: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theoretical Framework - Theory of Human Motivation

1. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs History: In 1943 Maslow presented his theory of human motivation which explained individual needs in a five tier concept, with lower level needs at the foundation an higher minded growth needs at the apex (McLeod, 2018).

2. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory Evolution:Originally Maslow suggested that lower needs needed to be met before advancing to higher levels, later he changed his claim to reflect an individual's ability to rise to higher levels without attaining 100% satisfaction of a lower level. He further advanced his theory to include observations regarding innate curiosity (McLeod, 2018).

3. Theorists who supported Maslow's theory: Douglas McGregor, Roberto Assagioli, Colin Wilson, Abbie Hoffman, Wayne Dyer, and Elliot Aronson.

4. Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Fills the Gap in my research by providing a theoretical framework that supports a robust understanding of motivational factors that are impacted by individual decision making and view teacher's choice to stay or leave their profession through the lens of deficiency need satisfaction or growth needs. Each relates to the PA pillar of accountability in so much as work quality and productivity are essential within a public school performance construct.

5. Key Topic Issues to Explore both in my study and in the Literature Review: The impacts of such factors as; leadership, salary, educational mandates, student discipline issues, and personal issues. These factors will be framed within a satisfaction/dissatisfaction measurement and related absenteeism and attrition rates within 9th grade teachers in three southern California school districts.

6. Research Problem, question, and the significance of my study: There is extensive research regarding teacher retention; however there is little research on determining the specific factors that impact 9th grade teacher satisfaction, dissatisfaction, and attrition in secondary public high schools in culturally diverse communities.

7. Topic Confirmations in Literature: There has been extensive research conducted on the issue of teacher attrition and the impact it has on secondary Public School education, all of which suggest the potential for multiple causes but lack focused insight into the problem, specifically looking at multiple school districts and 9th grade teachers.

8. Topic Controversies: Perhaps the most significant issue is related to understanding how personal experiences drive the decision making of teachers to leave their positions, hence my decision to investigate this phenomena through the lens of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to uncover motivations not previously revealed in the study of why teacher's leave their positions or vocation entirely.
