1. Progressivism
1.1. Consequences to Society are Emphasized
1.2. Learning is Rooted in Questions Developed by Learners.
1.3. Improve Society
1.4. Influence
1.4.1. Progressivism in some aspect I feel can be beneficial but in other ways I feel that I would struggle to implement this into my teaching. One topic the book talks about is student- teacher planning. In chemistry I think it is good to ask questions but I am not sure students would have the understanding of the material to have an influence on what is being taught or talked about in class. I feel this could be a good approach in other subject but difficult to implement in STEM areas.
2. Essentialism
2.1. Master Facts and Information About the Physical World
2.2. Goals to Transmit the Cultural Heritage and Develop Good Citizens
2.3. Children are the Learners
2.4. Subject Matter is Core
2.5. Three Basic Principles
2.5.1. Core of Information
2.5.2. Hard Work and Discipline
2.5.3. Teacher Centered Instruction
2.6. Influence
2.6.1. I enjoy the core value of knowing basic facts. I believe that there is basic information that all students should know. That being said I also think that school is more than a place to just learn information. I want my students to learn the information they need to know in a way that will help them solve future problems down the road. Student should be engaged in class and looking for ways to about solving problems. They should also be participating in the lecture/ discussion.
3. Pragmatism
3.1. Learn Best Through Experience
3.1.1. Interdisciplinary Approach
3.2. Evolving and Changing
3.3. Student Centered
4. Influence
4.1. I think that this will have a big impact on my teaching style. It teaches student to use all their resource and to think about how to solve problems. This is also an important skill that will help students adapt to change. This is an important skill in the science world which is why I can connect with this theory so well.
5. Realism
5.1. Ultimate Goal is advancement of Human Rationality
5.2. Physical Object are the Ultimate Reality
5.3. Scientific Research and Development
5.4. Master the Laws of the Universe
5.5. Teacher Centered
5.6. Influence
5.6.1. I think realism will show up often when I teach. Chemistry is a subject that is based on the physical work and the way we can calculate different events that happen via reactions. The texts states that, "realist teachers would emphasize the importance of teaching students to use experimental and observational techniques" (Johnson et al., 2018, p. 92). This pretty much sums up chemistry. Try different ideas and record the results. Chemistry is strongly based on the physical world around us.
