1.3. War with Carthage
1.3.1. In 264 B.C., Rome and Carthage went to war.
1.3.2. Hannibal assembled an army of 50,000 infantry, 9,000 cavalry, and 60 elephants with the intent of capturing Rome.
1.4. Rome Controls the Mediterranean
1.4.1. Rome's victories in the Punic Wars gave it domination over the western Mediterranean.
2. The beginnings of Rome
2.1. The city was founded in 753 B.C. by Romulus and Remus.
2.2. They were skilled metal workers and engineers.
2.3. Romans borrowed religious ideas from both the Greeks and the Etruscans.
2.3.1. adopted Ertuscan rituals that they believed helped them to win the favor of the gods.
3. The Early Republic
3.1. The last king of ROme was Tarquin the Proud. He was driven from power in 509 B.C.
3.1.1. Wealthy landowners who resented the Etruscan kings, overthrew him. The roman declared they would never agin be ruled by a king.

3.2.1. In the earlyrepublic, different groups of Romans struggled for power

3.3.1. The laws were carved on twelve tablets, or tables, and hung in the Forum.
3.4. Government Under The Republic
3.4.1. The Romans had two officials called consuls. Like kings, they commanded the army and directed the government.
