Independent Learning by Mind Map: Independent Learning

1. Develop a clear understanding of learning goals between students and teachers with learning contracts.

1.1. Learning contracts are:

2. Ownership

3. Independent learning does not necessariyl means working alone

4. COGNITIVE SKILLS include developing informal rules for problem solving, classifying objects, forming hypothesis, and reasoning logically.

4.1. METACOGNITIVE SKILLS include the ability to describe how they learn and the ability to reflect and self-monitor.

5. SKILLS NEEDED: Cognitive, Metacognitive, Affective

5.1. AFFECTIVE SKILLS include motivation and delayed gratification.

6. Element 1. Shift of responsibility for the learning process

6.1. student-centered

7. An independent learning is the result of the student's personal accountability to his/her own learning with a certain degree of sense of motivatation, interest and focus. In this learning stage, the students can already work and accomplish tasks alone even without the presence of a teacher or a parent for they have a clear vision and purpose of doing such things. - Joy Dalinas

8. Element 4: enabling physical environment

8.1. - appropriate physical environment - flexible approach to time - shared willingness to undertake independent learning

9. Element 2: Self-regulation; self-motivation

9.1. Self-Directed

9.1.1. Step 1: Assess readiness to learn

9.1.1.1. Step 2: Set learning goals

9.1.1.1.1. Step 3: Engage in the learning process

9.1.1.2. Conducting a self-evaluation of their current situation, study habits, family situation and support network both at school and at home and also involves evaluating past experiences with independent learning.

9.2. self-monitor

10. Independent learning is the ability of a learner to study alone with understanding and comprehension. It is the responsibility of the learner to study and the teacher will serve as a coach. It teaches responsibility and honesty in doing activities. It is helpful in boosting learners confidence. ---- - Marlon Alipio

11. Promotes independence and responsibility among students. It will cater also to the different needs of students and may encourage more students to participate.

11.1. Developing Independent Learners (according to Mark Gershon)

11.2. Schools can promote independent learning among students by including support for teachers, study support, empowering to use students self-regulation, and student voice.

11.2.1. First, we have the alteration of our own mindsets. Given the nature of the teaching profession, we tend to find ourselves instinctively helping the pupils we teach as soon as they have a problem. Without thinking, we do whatever we can to aid their understanding and ensure they are able to access the learning. This is all well and good but, as with many virtues, overexposure can turn it into a vice.

11.2.1.1. A second technique he has found useful involves setting up activities in which pupils are given a framework within which they have to make various choices. This is akin to a football manager developing a formation and then allowing the players to express themselves within that formation. By providing a structure, you are setting the boundaries for the learning and situating it somewhere specific inside the vast mass of all that is possible. By giving pupils options and choices within that framework, you are encouraging them to make decisions and to be independent.

12. Independent learning is when a student acquires knowledge in his/her own pace or effort and develops the ability to set goals, monitor and evaluate their own learning. Feedback is essential in boosting the confidence of a student. - Josie Cadavos-

12.1. Element 3: Strong relationship between teachers and students

13. To promote independent learning, the school should support the teachers, the study support, empower the students to use self-regulation, and the student voice.

14. Independent learning is the ability to monitor and evaluate his/her progress. It also develops and emphasizes creative thinking and problem solving skills which will lead to taking the responsibility of their own learning. Thus, confidence and competence are indeed enhanced. --- Mayette R. Abante

15. Independent learning is a strategy wherein learning is in the hands of the students. It helps the students to develop responsibility for his/her own learning. Learners are able to set goals, make choices, and decide on how to meet his/her own learning needs. - Ryan Alvarez

16. Independent learning is a method of learning where pupils are in - charge and in - control of their own learning. In this method, they set their goals and make choices and decisions on how they learn. They also take full responsibility in constructing and carrying out their own learning, monitoring their progress and assessing their learning outcomes. One can become an independent learner when he is motivated to undertake such endeavor. He should also be strong and tough enough in overcoming challenges that may come his way. And lastly, independent learning is only possible when one knows how to manage his time because if not, independent learning will be a failure. ****Katherine M. Villostas

17. The ICT play an important role in independent learning because it offer opportunities for the easy assessment and measurement of self-directed learning, it increase the speed of access of information, and it provide a medium for interaction between learners and between learners and their teachers.

18. Teachers can promote independent learning by building a supportive environment, providing students with the opportunity to monitor themselves, and provide feedback on homework to improve confidence.

18.1. Teacher can provide students an opportunity to the learners for self monitoring and work independently.

18.1.1. Teacher should see to it that the skill of the student in cognitive, metacognitive and affective should also address in idependent learning.

18.1.2. How School Promote independent learning?

19. Independent learning is a collaborative effort between and among teachers and students which can be realized through work ethics, ICT, and digital tools.

20. ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENT LEARNING:

21. provide the students with opportunities to self-monitor by receiving feedbacks from others and from oneself

22. 1) Written Feedback

22.1. 2) Record and Reflect

22.1.1. 3) Feedback Focus

22.1.1.1. 4) Confidence Scale

23. CONFIDENCE LEVEL - helps the students think and analyze their learning objective whether they can do it or not and monitor their progress

23.1. FEEDBACK FOCUS - personalizes the learning development by having each students focus on their own objectives

23.1.1. RECORD AND REFLECT - students reflect on their own progress and performances

23.1.1.1. WRITTEN FEEDBACK-it is still important to give teacher's feedback so that student can track their progress , knows what to do next and it also helps to boost their confidence.

24. Three key elements to promote independent learning: 1. Self-Motivation 2. Resiliency to overcome challenges 3. An excellent time manager

25. The third and final approach to consider involves formative feedback. This is feedback which gives students a clear sense of what they need to do to improve. For example: ‘In your next report you should aim to begin the analysis earlier so as to avoid too many passages of description.’ - modified by Vincent Navarez

26. Benefit 1: Improved academic performance

26.1. Benefit 3: Greater awareness of limitations and ability to manage them

27. Providing feed back on the student's work and giving reinforcement on their performance helps to promote independent learning and develop their reflective aspect as a metacognition.

27.1. Teachers promote through scaffolding; provision for self-monitoring; offering models of behavior; developed communication focused on learning; and providing feedback

27.1.1. teacher as a coach

28. Learners today are curious in everything. Once they are engaged they are willing to do any activity. Once they were able to discover the solution of a certain problem by themselves , thos gives them the feeling of ownership and will boost their level of confidence. - Marlon Alipio

29. Independent learning is a process in which the students can able to do his/her academic task or development in his/her own. It is by using different platform. the students creativity and intellectual ability can be develop by their own.

30. Benefit 4: Enabling teachers to provide differentiated tasks

30.1. Differentiated teaching especially in math is a good idea because the teachers will be able to give more of his or her attention to those who are finding it difficult to understand the topic being discussed because others work independently. It can also be a good thing for those who are advanced because the teacher can provide a higher level of activities.
