lateral and vertical thinking by Mind Map: lateral and vertical thinking

1. type of vertial thinking

1.1. How is the method of vertical thinking?

1.1.1. Methods of vertical thinking are essentially sequential in nature. You have to proceed step by step along a path. You can go from one step to another in a cluttered manner and then fill the gap or allow the stitches to join in a pattern. You can jump straight to the conclusion and then reason the path that led you there.

1.1.2. Most methods of vertical thinking are very useful in areas such as mathematics and science. These matters imply objective and very precise truths that can not be changed. For example, someone who is trying to solve the mathematical operation (21 + 3 - 2 + 10 - 1) must think vertically, since these operations require the use of a few steps in a specific order.

2. differents between lateral and vertical thinking

3. type of lateral thinking

3.1. Lateral thinkers are more disruptive in class, always asking questions and wanting to know as much they can about everything. To use an old and abused cliché, they think outside the box. They make a lot of mistakes, but that’s because they try so many different things. They don’t have to be right all the time because, as Thomas Edison once said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” Lateral thinkers don’t give up, and look for new ways to do things. They are the ones who start new companies, and take risks.

4. lateral thinking

4.1. example of it

4.1.1. Imagine that your family arrives home from a weekend trip to find Mom’s favorite vase broken on the floor beside the dining room table. Close examination shows that the family cat’s paw prints are clearly visible on the tabletop.

4.2. Lateral thinking involves looking at a situation or problem from a unique or unexpected point of view.

5. vertical thinking

5.1. example of it

5.1.1. If you were given a paper clip and told by someone to use it for something, what would you do with it? Some people would use it to hold two pieces of paper together. Others might create some neat looking figures out of it. Still others would be evil and unwind it only to jab someone with it.

5.2. Vertical thinking refers to a way of analyzing, processing, and using information in a logical, patterned, or direct way. In other words, there isn't much room for creativity here. There's commonly a pre-structured way of processing some sort of information and putting that information to use.
