2.4. Guru Parampara || Spiritual Masters

2.4.1. About our Guru Parampara

2.4.1.1. For the pleasure of the vaisnavas, here is a small article I wrote to clear up common misconceptions about our lineage: The Sri Bhagavata-guru-parampara. I humbly request your patient indulgence and invite you to engage in a thoughtful and unbiased deliberation upon the sastric basis and sublime beauty of the bhagavata-guru-parampara. In Bhakti Sandarbha Anu 283 Srila Jiva Gosvami explains: Sri bhagavata-mate panca-ratradivad arcanamargasyavasyakatvam nasti, tad vinapi saranapatty adinam ekatarenapi purusartha siddher abhihitatvat. “According to the view of Srimad Bhagavatam, the path of arcana, as outlined in books like the Pancaratra, is not required, because even without it one can attain perfection by following even one of the limbs of bhakti.” The implication is that sadhu sanga, nama-kirtana, bhagavata-sravana, etc. are independently powerful in the matter of immediately bestowing bhava, provided the prospective recipient is offenseless. (duruhadbhuta virye’smin BRS 1.2.238) Srila Jiva Gosvami nevertheless goes on to say: “Yet those who desire to establish a specific relationship with Bhagavan by adopting the processes outlined by sages such as Narada (Pancaratra) should perform arcana after accepting diksha from a worthy guru.” From such statements as this it is clear that diksha in accordance with Pancatratra is recommended by Srila Jiva Gosvami, whilst simultaneously recognizing the possibility of pure bhakti, the essence of svarupa-sakti, being transferred from the heart of any pure devotee into the heart of any recipient of his compassion without regard to external formalities. We find exactly the same idea in Anuccheda 237: Tathapi vaisistya lipsuh saktas cet tato bhagavac chastropadestrnam bhagavan-mantopadestrnam va sri guru carananam nityam eva visesatah sevamkuryat. “Yet if one longs to taste a specific flavor of love and has the ability to do so, one should continuously and single-mindedly render service to the lotus feet of a guru who can instruct one in the confidential conclusions of scripture OR to a guru who initiates one into the mystery of the mantras that embody divinity.” Srila Jiva Gosvami then proceeds to give examples of both cases, namely perfection achieved by the grace of the bhagavata-guru and perfection achieved by the grace of mantra guru. Indeed, Srila Jiva Gosvami begins his Sat Sandarbha with atha natva mantragurum gurun bhagavatarthadan – Now, after offering obeisances to my mantra-guru (diksha-guru) and to those gurus who taught me the meaning of the Bhagavata (bhagavata-gurus), I wish to write this book called Sri Bhagavat-sandarbha.” The point is that if there are two types of gurus, by logical necessity, there are two types of guru-parampara. Some claim that “guru-parampara” means “diksha-guru-parampara”, and as such cannot refer to another system. This is refuted by Srila Visvanath Cakravarti Thakura’s Sarartha Darsini: atha ca tena sväditatväd atimadhuraà tataù sutädi- çäkhätaù çanaiù çanaiù patanäd akhaëòitaà tena guru-paramparäà vinä sva-buddhi-balenäsvädane çré-bhägavatasya khaëòitatve pänäsaktiù sücitä (Bhag.1.1.3). “The sweetness of the fruit of the Bhagavatam, having been tasted by Sukadeva Gosvami, has become even sweeter. Moreover, it remains unbroken, coming down step by step from the branch of Suta Gosvami and others. What is implied here is that without the guru-parampara, one cannot drink Bhagavatam in its unbroken form just by trying to taste on the strength of one’s material intelligence.” Note that Srila Visvanath Cakravarti Thakura recognizes the line of Srila Vyasadeva, Sri Sukadeva Gosvami, Sri Suta Gosvami, Sri Saunaka Rsi and so on, as a guru-parampara. Since in this case there are no diksha connections between any of the members and their connection is based exclusively on relishing the rasa of Srimad Bhagavatam, it must be concluded that this is an example of bhagavata-guru-parampara. So there are two approaches to pure bhakti: the Pancaratrika approach and the Bhagavata approach. Acaryas recommend that both should go hand in hand. They are not to be regarded as mutually exclusive or competing systems. Rather, they function as complementary aspects for the propagation of suddha-bhakti. As Mahaprabhu instructed Srila Rupa Gosvami - ei suddha bhakti iha haite prema haya, pancaratre, bhagavate ei laksana kaya (C.C. Madhya 19.169) The bhagavata-guru parampara is comprised of bhagavatas, devotees who are the receptacles of bhakti-rasa. A devotee may or may not have a formal connection with a bhagavata devotee, yet simply by hearing his katha, the heart becomes infused with bhakti-rasa, as described by Srila Krsna das Kaviraja Gosvami: sri-krsna-caitanya ara prabhu nityananda yanhara prakase sarva jagat ananda. “The appearance of Sri Krsna Caitanya and Prabhu Nityananda has surcharged the world with happiness.” (C.С. Adi 1.87) dui bhai hrdayera ksali’ andhakara dui bhagavata-sange karana saksatkara “These two brothers (Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda) dissipate the darkness of the inner core of the heart, and thus They help one meet the two kinds of bhagavatas (persons or things in relationship with the Personality of Godhead).” (C.С. Adi 1.98) eka bhagavata bada-bhagavata-sastra ara bhagavata-bhakta bhakti-rasa-patra “One of the bhagavatas is the great scripture Srimad-Bhagavatam, and the other bhagavata is the pure devotee absorbed in the mellows of loving devotion.” (C.С. Adi 1.99) dui bhagavata dvara diya bhakti-rasa tanhara hrdaye tanra preme haya vasa “Through the actions of these two bhagavatas, the Lord instills the mellows of transcendental loving service into the heart of a living being, and thus the Lord, in the heart of His devotee, comes under the control of the devotee’s love. ” (C.C. Adi 1.100) It is commonly misunderstood that a bhagavata-guru-parampara is a siksha line as opposed to a diksha line. But this is not the case. While diksha, siksha or both may be present in any parampara, they have no value unless there is a perfect current of bhava (suddha sattva visesatma) flowing from one generation to the next. Ecstatic love is the very substance of a parampara. A qualified guru may give diksha to many disciples. Some of them may in turn choose to give diksha to others in the future. But if one who is not realized gives diksha, then the flow of realization will not reach the next generation. Exactly the same is true of siksha. Thus a diksha-parampara or siksha-parampara may exist indefinitely, with an unbroken chain and all the other oft-quoted attributes, and still be defunct because bhakti is causeless, that is, only the bhakti, the essence of svarupa-sakti in one person can infuse bhakti into another. The materialistic speculators who have no experience of the transmission of svarupa-sakti are concerned with only the details of outer procedures in order to define to their satisfaction the nature of a parampara. However, pure vaisnavas have discerned the current of divine realization to be the very essence of a sat-sampradaya, without which all mantra- japa, study of sastra, and so on, are simply decorations on a dead body. (bhagavad-bhakti-hinasya jatih sastram japas tapah apranasyeva dehasya mandanam loka-ranjanam) Furthermore, the only way a lifeless parampara may be resuscitated is by contact with a maha-bhagavata devotee. Thus the bhagavata-guru-paramapara is itself spiritually alive and also has the ability to bring life to a diksha or siksha- parampara that has lost its essence (sa kaleneha mahata yogo nasta parantapa). One should note that in the bhagavata-guru parampara of Srila Sasravati Thakura, every member has been duly initiated into a fully recognized and historically contiguous pancaratrika-diksha guru-parampara. Thus the Bhagavata-guru- parampara has the unique feature of incorporating within itself the pancaratrika-guru-parampara. Acknowledgement of this fact dispels the futile concern that the concept of bhagavata-guru-parampara is likely to promote a laxity in the transmission of sampradayika order, discipline and tradition. The bhagavata-guru-parampara necessarily incorporates all the positive features of the pancaratrika-guru-parampara while simultaneously compensating for the aforementioned possible weaknesses of an exclusive diksha lineage. Thus when we speak of the bhagavata-guru-parampara, we speak of a substantial connection in the fullest sense of the word, externally and internally. All aspects of anugatya (following), in terms of acara (practice), pracara (preaching), vicara (doctrine) and bhavamayi-seva (sentiments of loving service), are all fully present in a bhagavata-guru-parampara. And that is precisely what we find in the bhagavata-guru-parampara of Srila Sarasvati Thakura. There is no need to be deterred from the whole-hearted acceptance of the parampara of Srila Sarasvati Thakura by the presence of some historical gaps. The list given by Prabhupada simply mentions the most influential vaisnavas of the bhagavata-guru-parampara. Undoubtedly each member of the bhagavata-guru-parampara has associated on the deepest level through direct, live, in-person sadhu-sanga with his prior acarya. There are no gaps at all. It must be stressed that all members of the bhagavata-guru-parampara of Srila Sarasvati Thakur are duly initiated into various historically intact pancaratrika diksha paramaras. Maliciously inclined persons who are ignorant of history have made false allegations regarding the historical continuity of our line. Cynically preying on similarly ignorant yet innocent devotees, they seek to obstruct their faith. Persons concerned with the issue of historical continuity are advised to find all the historical gap-filling information they need on page 52 of Prabandha Pancakam. Now, returning to the subject of the Madhva sampradaya, among the acaryas of the four sampradayas, Madhva is the only one who established Krsna of Vrndavan as the predominating deity of the central temple of his sampradaya. This is extremely significant and not even remotely contentious. Ramanujacarya worshiped Lord Narayana. Visnusvami was an upasaka of Lord Nrsimhadeva. The Bhavartha-Dipika of Sridhara Svami, who appeared in the Visnusvami sampradaya, was undoubtedly very important to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Nevertheless, since the Lord had to choose one sampradaya or another, He chose Madhva’s line out of his supremely independent sweet will. There is one more area that poses difficulties in accepting the Madhva connection. Although the service of Sri Krsna of Vrndavan is common to Madhva and Sri Caitanya, where is the anugatya in acara, vicara, pracara and bhavamayi-seva? It will take a sympathetic ear to grasp the answer. From a purely external perspective, a later personage in a parampara can only give whatever he has received from his predecessors. So a conundrum arises in the case of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. On the one hand, He must keep intact his humanlike pastimes of accepting a guru, and simultaneously He must “give what was never given before,” rather than just giving what was already given before. Therefore, to avoid the appearance of a gross departure from the anugatya of His guru-jana, it was first necessary for Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to inspire the gradual appearance of an extraordinary and unprecedented flavor of Krsna prema in certain personalities prior to his own appearance. Thus we have the transrational manifestation of a deeper level bhakti in personalities such as Jayadeva Gosvami, Bilvamangala Thakura and later Laksmipati Tirtha, Madhavendra Puri and Sri Isvara Puri, which is inexplicable in terms of an empirical historical analysis of their spiritual forebears. It is only explicable in terms of divine lila. If you don’t believe in divine lila, then you will never accept the connection. Though appearing before Mahaprabhu, his immediate parampara are really an integral part of his humanlike lila of accepting a spiritual lineage.
