1. The Hero

1.1.1. Intelligent

1.1.1.1. Citra is already very knowledgeable and is able to adapt to many situations.

1.1.1.1.1. Plotted Rowans getaway once she became a scythe. This required a lot of planning.

1.1.1.1.2. She researched and found scythe Faraday even though everyone thought he was dead

1.1.1.2. Although, once she became an apprentice, all her knowledge and common sense is completely changed and has to start a new

1.1.2. Both Rowan and Citra were thrown into apprenticeship without much of a choice.

1.1.3. tempermental

1.1.3.1. She gets very angry and has very strong emotions

1.1.3.1.1. not afraid to challenge authorities if she needs to

1.1.3.1.2. "As he moved to a place it on the table next to her, Citra thought of half a dozen places she could jam it into him that would either render him deadish, or at least incapacitated." Pg 326

1.1.4. strong and heroic

1.1.4.1. Citra is extremely strong compared to other apprentices and can quickly adapt to different situations for a Scythe

1.1.4.2. She learns a lot from both of her mentors so that she can become a better Scythe

1.1.4.2.1. Humanity from Scythe Faraday

1.1.4.2.2. Being able to see intentions and life in someone from Scythe Curie

2. The Journey

2.1. Emotional Journey

2.1.1. Rowan Damisch

2.1.1.1. Matures throughout his experiences as an apprentice

2.1.1.1.1. At first, he is extremely goofy and silly because he does not take life seriously

2.1.1.1.2. After slowly matures as he talks about gleaning with Scythe Faraday

2.1.1.1.3. Finally, Rowan becomes extremely serious and fearless because he goes through very tough events with Scythe Goddard

2.1.1.2. He becomes fearless, serious and full of hatred towards the end because of corrupt scythes like Goddard

2.1.1.2.1. Goddard trains Rowan to be a killing machine

2.1.1.3. Rowan also experiences forbidden love with Citra.

2.1.1.3.1. They kiss to get it out of their systems but will always love eachother

3. The Mentor

3.1. Scythe Faraday

3.1.1. Composed

3.1.1.1. His teachings were composed and subtle, teaching the kids to show no regret and fear

3.1.2. Teacher

3.1.2.1. Scythe Faraday was just in his gleanings, without bias or ill intent

3.1.2.1.1. "They were wise in their dealings and fair in their choices. Even the ones who sought celebrity were seen to deserve it. The idea that some scythes might not be as honorable as Scythe Faraday did not sit well with either of his new apprentices." Pg 79

3.1.2.1.2. Faraday believes that his gleaning victims should be chosen using statistics from accidental deaths from the Age of Mortality

3.1.2.2. Taught them the rules of Scythes and how the Scythedom works.(The Scythe Commandments)

3.1.2.2.1. Thou shalt kill.

3.1.2.2.2. Thou shalt not kill with bias, bigotry, or malice aforethought.

3.1.2.2.3. Thou shalt grant an annum of immunity to the beloved of those who accept your coming, and to anyone else you deem worthy.

3.1.2.2.4. Thou shalt kill the beloved of those who resist.

3.1.2.2.5. Thou shalt serve humanity for the full span of thy days, and thy family shall have immunity as recompense for as long as you live.

3.1.2.2.6. Thou shalt lead an exemplary life in word and deed, and keep a journal of each and every day.

3.1.2.2.7. Thou shalt not kill fellow scythes beyond thyself.

3.1.2.2.8. Thou shalt claim no earthly possessions, save thy robes, ring, and journal.

3.1.2.2.9. Thou shalt have no spouse nor spawn.

3.1.2.2.10. Thou shalt be beholden to no laws beyond these.

3.1.3. Old Guard Scythe

3.1.3.1. Scythe Faraday is considered an old guard scythe. They are more sensible and abide by the apparent rules of the scythedome.

3.1.3.1.1. They do not glean for social standing or to make themselves better

3.1.3.2. New order Scythes like Goddard are considered visionaries and typically try and change the scythedom for their own benefit

3.1.3.2.1. "Embrace it, Rowan. Suckle at its transformative breast. You may think gleaning is an acquired taste, but it's not. The thrill of the hunt and the joy of the kill simmers in all of us. Bring it to the surface and then you'll be the kind of scythe this world needs." Pg 240

3.1.4. Humanity

3.1.4.1. Scythe Faraday constantly told them that normalizing themselves to gleaning/killing would not be okay and is the only thing that ties you to your humanity.

3.1.4.1.1. "Never lose your humanity," Scythe Faraday had told him, "or you'll be nothing more than a killing machine." He had used the word "killing" rather than "gleaning." Rowan hadn't thought much of it at the time, but now he understood; it stopped being gleaning the moment one became desensitized to the act." Pg 239

3.1.4.1.2. "Perhaps that is why we must, by law, keep a record. A public journal, testifying to those who will never die and those who are yet to be born, as to why we human beings do the things we do. We are instructed to write down not just our deeds but our feelings, because it must be known that we do have feelings. Remorse. Regret. Sorrow too great to bear. Because if we didn't feel those things, what monsters would we be?" Pg 4
