Year 5 - Animal Adaptations (ACSSU043) by Mind Map: Year 5 - Animal Adaptations (ACSSU043)

1. The Arts

1.1. Drama

1.1.1. Students choose an animal and make a movement sequence illustrating how that animal uses a particular adaptation (eg. a frill neck lizard, and its neck fill that scares off predators). ACADRM035

1.2. Visual Arts

1.2.1. Students choose an environment and create a diorama using natural materials. They must include animals hat have adapted to survive there and a fact file on the environment. they must use realistic colours and materials to create their environment. ACAVAM116

2. English

2.1. Literacy

2.1.1. Students choose an animal to research, looking specifically at the types of adaptations it has developed to survive. students will write a speech and present their findings via a presentation to the class. ACELY1700

2.2. Language

2.2.1. Students will read the text 'Uno's Garden' by Graeme Base. they must identify adaptations the animals in the text have to suit the changing environment. Students will write a short paragraph on the impacts humans have on the environment that resulted in these animals adapting and becoming endangered. ACELA1512

2.3. Literature

2.3.1. Students will write an informative narrative about an animal being born into its environment and learning how to adapt to changing conditions. While it is a non fiction narrative it must include relevant information about an animal and its adaptations. ACELT1612

3. Maths

3.1. Measurement & Geometry

3.1.1. Students will use National Geographic to complete a size sheet of a range of animals. In partners, students will arrange the animals in order from largest to smallest. Students will discuss why those animals are the size they are, and how this helps them survive. ACMMG108

3.2. Statistics & Probability

3.2.1. Students must match up adaptations with animals and their environments. Discuss with a partner what would happen if the animal was placed in a different environment. Is the animal likely or unlikely to survive?ACMSP117

4. Science

4.1. Earth and Space Sciences

4.1.1. Students will investigate why animals need the sun, they will create a short Ebook on their findings. ACSSU078

4.2. Physical Science

4.2.1. Students study the way light helps some animals with camouflage (above and below the water). Students will produce a scientific diagram about an animal and its camoufalgue. ACSSU080

5. HASS

5.1. Civics and Citizenship

5.1.1. Students will consider the rules and laws we have in Australia and imagine what rules and laws the animal kingdom might have. brainstorm ideas and design a set of rules for the animal kingdom. ACHASSK117

5.2. Geography

5.2.1. Students will research different environments in Australia. They will complete a cause and effect page about a particular environment when a hypothetical disaster hits eg. oil spill in reefs, fire in the rainforest, flooding in the desert. Students must describe what could happen and the effects this will have on the plants and animals in that environment. ACHASSK114

6. Technologies

6.1. Design and Technologies

6.1.1. Students create a 3D model of a new animal-inspired from 'Unos Garden' by Graeme Base. They must produce several designs before beginning to build. Students should investigate how they can incorporate sustainable and renewable materials into their designs. ACTDEK019

6.2. Digital Technologies

6.2.1. Students will work in pairs to produce a stop motion movie about an Australian environment, a particular animal and its adaptations. ACTDIP022
