1. Independence Leader 1: Benito Juarez

1.1. Discuss his impact on his nation's government

1.1.1. Present his work and efforts to improve the government in a PowerPoint slide. Also have students read excerpts from his reforms.

1.2. Students will learn about his upbringing and how it relates to you

1.2.1. Present his early life to students. Have them write a reflection on his life and how it relates to theirs.

2. Independence Leader 2: Jose Marti

2.1. Student will read some of his poems and political excerpts

2.1.1. Read one of his poems and excerpts during a lesson. Discuss its significance and impact to Cuba's national pride. Then I would have students create their own which they will present on another day.

2.2. Student will learn about his upbringing

2.2.1. Have students come to class and talk about an influential person in their lives. Marti revered many adult figures in his life when he was young.

3. Comprehension of Material

3.1. I will see if students comprehended the lessons on these leaders by the reflections they submitted. The reflections will show how the poems and excerpts made them feel or they even understood it at all.

3.2. Also I will notice their comprehension of the material through using discussion questions that will be in the PowerPoint presentations.

4. Motivation and Engagement

4.1. Have students write their own poems and relate unit concepts to their personal lives.
