COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAJE TEACHING by Mind Map: COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAJE TEACHING

1. CHARACTERISTICS

1.1. contextualization is basic.

1.2. CTL are encouraged in the beginning of instruction.

1.3. Activities and strategies for learning are varied.

1.4. Communicative competence is the goal of instruction

2. the communicative competence model is based on four areas of competence: linguistic, sociolinguistic, discursive and strategic.

2.1. linguistic competence

2.1.1. Includes vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and pronunciation.

2.1.2. Students should know the rules governing sentence structure, word formation, verb tenses, sound interactions, word and phrase meanings, and collocations.

2.2. sociolinguistic competence

2.2.1. is concerned with culture and the social rules that govern the appropriate use of language.

2.2.2. includes knowing in which context we need to be more formal, how we express politeness, how we address people correctly.

2.3. Discursive compentence

2.3.1. we can speak, write, read and listen to information of various kinds.

2.4. Strategic competence

2.4.1. We can paraphrase, use gestures or explain unfamiliar words; we can ask for clarification, repetition and slower speech.

2.4.2. modify messages with respect to audience and purpose; it shows that we are fluent and effective

3. Another advantage it has the class is not teacher-centered where only the teacherhas the last word and everything that he says is right, it is not like the traditionalmethod

4. this method has different points ofviews in which has advantages and disadvantages depending of the needs of eachteacher and each classroom, but there are more advantages of this method thandisadvantages

4.1. ADVANTAGES

4.1.1. One advantage this method has is it seeks to personalize and localize languageand adapt it to interests of learners making them to get motivated in the learning oracquisition of language

4.2. DISVANTAGES

4.2.1. is the communication according to ability, because as we know the CLT method tries to improve the communicative skills ofstudents

4.2.1.1. it is not possible to use this method in lower classes where the vocabulary is not enough to express what the students think and if they express something it will not be authentic conversations.

4.2.1.2. is not a total disadvantage, because everybody starts learning the language this way. If we look at native speakers when they are in the first steps of language development they don't have enough vocabulary to carry on a conversation but with practice and time they will develop their communicative skills

5. Definition of CLT

5.1. Communicative competence is what a speaker needs to know in order to be communicatively competent in a speech community

5.2. it is an approach, not a method; a unified but broadly based theoretical position about the nature of language and of language learning and teaching

5.2.1. The most cited definition by Bryant Duhon (1998) from the Gartner Group.

5.3. Background

5.3.1. This approach is found in the changes in the British language teaching tradition dating from the late 1960s.
