Piedad Casas Operating System by Mind Map: Piedad Casas Operating System

1. Define: Operating System

1.1. The software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals

2. Define: Open Source

2.1. of or relating to or being computer software for which the source code is freely available.

3. Define: RAM

3.1. can be compared to short-term memory and hard drive in people with long-term memory. The short-term memory focuses on the work at hand, but few can maintain information at a time. If the short-term memory fills up, your brain sometimes is able to store information in long-term memory. Even a computer works this way. If RAM fills up, the processor must constantly access the hard drive to replace the old data in RAM with new, slowing down the operation of your computer. Unlike the hard disk that can become completely full of data and not accepting others, the RAM runs out of memory. Remains operational, but much more slowly than is desirable. This is a short articles from ram definition, hope you enjoy.

4. Market

5. Windows 8

5.1. Pros

5.1.1. The new UI will help merge the tablet and PC markets and allow PCs to benefit from touch capabilities

5.1.2. Windows 8 will run from a USB drive even when older version of Windows are installed on the host

5.2. Cons

5.2.1. Microsoft has pulled the start button off the legacy interface, complicating any Windows 8 rollout in a corporate

5.2.2. This is such a revolutionary version, users will need a lot of training

6. Mac Os

6.1. Pros

6.1.1. Using the Mac operating system has its own advantages and disadvantages. For one thing, Mac OS is the only commercial operating system that is custom-made to work with Apple’s hardware. This gives it a level of efficiency, power, and stability, which is most important for the workplace.

6.1.2. Mac OS X is still the operating system of choice for graphic artists, designers and most others who work with visual and audio media. It also synchronizes user information well across multiple Apple devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, making it easily usable in a mobile office environment.

6.2. Cons

6.2.1. When switching between desktops, desktop icons sometimes don't show up. Back/forward gestures disabled, even in finder. So you need to press on that little back/forward arrow to go back or forward in applications like Chrome. However, one could use two/three finger swipe gesture to switch between pages in Safari, iCal. It seems that Apple is trying to promote its own apps. When switching to an app on a different desktop with Finder open, screen would give a quick flash.

6.2.2. Launchpad is not as useful as it seems, you could always use spotlight or third-party search apps to find things quickly. Switching between apps is not as straightforward as in Snow Leopard where you could just swipe four fingers and select the one from the active apps. Whereas in Lion, there is mission control, you need to switch between desktops first and find the target app and then activate it.

7. Linux Ubunty

7.1. pros

7.1.1. Linux, was once the play toy of computer hobbyists and workhorse of behind-the-scenes computing tasks (most of the internet is served up by servers running Linux, for example). These days, it has become a home computing and office platform for the common user as well.

7.1.2. Distributions such as Linux Mint and the increasingly popular Ubuntu were designed especially to be easy and non-threatening for the average user. Implementing Linux on an enterprise level can add up to huge savings: the operating system, and almost all of its available software (including the Microsoft-compatible Libre Office) are 100% free. (There’s no lack of available software, either–as you might expect of a platform built by computer enthusiasts!)

7.2. cons

7.2.1. Can’t install most software because most software are built for Windows and not Ubuntu, this mean you will have to use emulators to install Windows software to make it work on your Ubuntu system. Also, there is no guarantee if the emulator will work perfectly or not.

7.2.2. New and latest hardware normally do not support Ubuntu right away. This is not a problem with Ubuntu, it’s because the hardware manufactures take longer to come out with the hardware support for Ubuntu. Many Windows video games cannot be install with Ubuntu since it is not built for games.
