1. Windows 8

1.1. pros

1.1.1. 1. "Windows 8 brings together the best of the PC and the tablet," said Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer.

1.1.2. 2. Windows 8 was designed from the ground up to provide a snappier operating system that takes advantage of the latest advancements in hardware and processing tools. When Microsoft released the Consumer Preview version of the OS a few months ago, many were surprised just how fast Microsoft had made Windows 8. Shaving seconds off most tasks, computers running Windows 8 will be able to start faster, load programs quicker and manage tasks more efficiently with an overhauled Task Manager.

1.2.1. 1. "The problem is that Microsoft is not giving users the chance to get used to the new operating system slowly. Instead they are launching this in an all-or-nothing way."

1.2.2. 2. From an IT perspective, the changes made to Windows 8 could end up costing businesses a lot of money. To take advantage of many of the new features offered, new hardware will need to be purchased to support the higher graphics demand and touch-sensitive aspects of the OS.

2. Mac OS X

2.1.1. 1. Users of OS X 10.2 and later also have the option of using a single-click, easy-on/easy-off interface.

2.1.2. 2.Mac OS X is still the operating system of choice for graphic artists, designers and most others who work with visual and audio media. It also synchronizes user information well across multiple Apple devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, making it easily usable in a mobile office environment.

2.2.1. 1. For pre-10.2 systems, the command line interface may be unfamiliar to long-time Macintosh GUI users.

2.2.2. 2. Apple’s computer platform is often mistakenly thought to be immune from viruses and other malicious software. While it is true that you rarely hear of a Mac that has gotten a virus, they are not immune. Criminals simply don’t write malicious software for Macs very often. Don’t be taken in with a false sense of security!

3. Linux Ubuntu

3.1. Pros

3.1.1. 1. Distributions such as Linux Mint and the increasingly popular Ubuntu were designed especially to be easy and non-threatening for the average user. Implementing Linux on an enterprise level can add up to huge savings: the operating system, and almost all of its available software (including the Microsoft-compatible Libre Office) are 100% free. (There’s no lack of available software, either–as you might expect of a platform built by computer enthusiasts!)

3.1.2. 2. Most versions of Linux are also easy to update and install. Linux software is also highly customizable–something that software services can make use of to make a network more secure.

3.2.1. 1. Its biggest disadvantage is that its end-users and office workers are often scared of it at first. Perhaps more difficult is getting other managers or board members to approve the change. Fortunately, most IT departments will be happy to back up the decision!
