1. Encourage First Language in the Classroom

1.1. Allow ELL's to use their first language in class and on assignments

1.2. ELL's can complete dual language assignments

1.3. Students may complete multilingual signs

1.4. May work with same language partner to discuss and clarify

2. Use a Dual Language Approach

2.1. Use of first language for assignments allows ELL's to draw on their strengths

2.2. Encourage students to develop their ideas in their own language first and then in English

2.3. Students will develop academically, socially, and will enhance their self-esteem when encouraged to use their first language

3. Build on Prior Knowledge

3.1. Allow all students to integrate their culture and language in all subjects

3.1.1. e.g. Geography - allow student to present climate graph on country of origin

3.1.2. e.g. Math - allow students to problem solve using previously learned strategies

4. Celebrate Diversity

4.1. All students should be given chances to share information about their language, culture, heritage

4.1.1. e.g. in Art- students can depict their culture and discuss their art work with the class and share some experiences
