1. LOOKS LIKE
1.1. Left arm Shorter than the RIght
1.1.1. 'His left arm was somewhat shorter than his right; when he stood or walked the back of his hand was at right-angles to his body, his thumb parallel to his thigh' Chapter 1 pg. 3 (just like Tom Robinsons)
1.1.1.1. This gives a physical description of Jem's bodily appearance. This is at the very beginning of the book and as we read we begin to wonder how and why this happened.
1.2. Soft Brown hair and eyes
1.2.1. 'Jem's soft brown hair and eyes, his oval face and snug-fitting ears were our mother's, contrasting oddly with Atticus's graying black hair and square-cut features, but they were somehow alike. Mutual defiance made them alike.' Chapter 15 pg. 166
1.2.1.1. This passage gives us a very good description of what Jem looks like. When we read we get the basic idea of what a character looks like and with this description we can see that Jem looks like his mother. we can also see that Jem doesn't look like Atticus that much but at the same time has subtle hints that he does.
1.3. Shaggy hair
1.3.1. 'Jem brushed his hair back to get a better look.' Chapter 1 pg. 7
1.3.1.1. This description tells us that he does not only have brown hair but he has a very untidy and un-groomed hairstyle.
2. BELIEFS & VALUES
2.1. Belief: Protect the fragile and harmless
2.1.1. 'He was certainly never cruel to animals, but I had never known his charity to embrace the insect world. "Why couldn't I mash him?" I asked. "Because they don't bother you," Jem answered in the darkness.' Chapter 25 pg. 259
2.1.1.1. Tom Robinson has just been killed and ever since the trial Jem has been very protective and has become much wiser because he has seen what happens in court when a black man and white woman go to trial
2.2. Belief: Atticus is always right
2.2.1. "Atticus, are we going to win it?" "No, honey." Chapter 8
2.2.1.1. This quote shows us that Atticus is right because Tom Robinson was convicted rape. Jem was so determined that they would win but Atticus knew right from the get-go that they would loose hence making him pretty much always right.

2.3.1. Jem stayed moody and silent for a week. Chapter 7 pg. 63
2.3.1.1. The passage here tells us that this is the very beginning of puberty for Jem. He us moody, quiet and he requires his solitude. this is one of his values because throughout the book he spends a lot of time on his own and if anyone bothers him he would get very upset.
2.4. Value: Family
2.4.1. After one altercation when Jem hollered, "It's time you started bein' a girl and acting right!" I burst into tears and fled to Calpurnia. Chapter 12 pg 125
2.4.1.1. Although in this passage Jem may seem a bully to Scout, he actually means well. Jem loves his family especially Scout because they grew up together. All he wants for her is the best and even though that may upset her he does speak the truth. He says this because he cares for her.
3. HOW OTHERS SEE HIM OR HER...
3.1. Quick Thinker
3.1.1. I admired my brother. Matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal. Chapter 6 pg. 60
3.1.1.1. This passage obvious shows Scouts love and admiration for her brother. Although they seem to be in deep trouble she still has enough thought to tell herself that she admires Jem's actions, whether they were bad or not.
3.2. Growing Up
3.2.1. "Don't you fret too much over Mister Jem-" she began. "Mister Jem?" "Yeah, he's just about Mister Jem now." Chapter 12 pg.125
3.2.1.1. Everyone grows up and i think that Calpurnia admires that even though Jem hurt scouts feelings he just told her what was right. I think this passage shows Jem growing up considering the term 'Mister' was used. Calpurnia sees Jem as a growing boy. Constantly.
3.3. Kind
3.3.1. "That'd be right nice, Jem, we can thank 'em- what's wrong?" Chapter 7 pg. 66
3.3.1.1. Jem has decided to thank this person who has been leaving small things for himself and his sister. This shows that he is kind and thoughtful and Scouts sees this very much so in Jem.
4. ACTS LIKE
4.1. Playful
4.1.1. "I know what we are going to play," Jem Announced. Chapter 4.
4.1.1.1. This shows us that Jem is in charge, but playful.
4.2. Older
4.2.1. "Don't you cry, now, Scout... don't cry now, don't you worry-" he muttered at me all the way to school. Chapter 7
4.2.1.1. This quote tells us that Jem is older than scout through telling scout to calm down. "don't you worry" is a thing normally a mother, friend or older person would say to you and this shows us that Jem is older.
4.3. Fair
4.3.1. Jem suddenly grinned at him. “Come on home to dinner with us, Walter,” he said. “We’d be glad to have you.” Walter’s face brightened, then darkened. Chapter 3 pg 13
4.3.1.1. Scout beats up Walter Cunningham on the first day of school because he gets her into trouble. Jem feels bad and embarrassed of Scout, so he invites Walter to lunch to make things fair.
5. MOTIVATED BY
5.1. Being Older than Scout
5.1.1. "That's what I thought, too," he said at last, "when I was your age. If there's just one kind of folks, why can't they get along with each other? If they're all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other? Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time... it's because he wants to stay inside." Chapter 23, Page 117
5.1.1.1. This tells us that Jem is older and likes his power over Scout because he has more knowledge about certain things then her.
5.2. Atticus
5.2.1. "Atticus says cheating a black man is ten times worse than cheating a white." CHAPTER 20, PAGE 205
5.2.1.1. Jem wants to be like Atticus, so when Atticus teaches him an important lesson, he likes to make it clear that Atticus is always right.
5.3. Equality
5.3.1. "Doesn't make it right," said Jem stolidly. He beat his fist softly on his knee. "You just can't convict a man on evidence like that-you can't." Chapter 23
5.3.1.1. throughout the book, Jem is strongly driven by equality for all. The court case is a big thing for Jem because he see's how unfair the world treats black people because of their skin colour.
6. TEXTUAL ISSUES OR CONCERNS LINKED TO THIS CHARACTER
6.1. Jem will forget about made up games and wanting to play
6.1.1. "Jem was 12. He was difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody. His appetite was appalling, and he told me so many times to stop pestering him" Chapter 12, pg 127
6.1.1.1. As Jem grows up, Scout is worried he won't want to play made up games with her. She is jealous of his "wisdom" because she aspires to be like Jem and desperately wants him to play with her.
