3. Learning Theories

3.1. Connectivism

3.1.1. learning theory for the digital age

3.1.2. no wrong answer, the opinions of others is what stimulates learning

3.1.3. you see connections between various fields, ideas and concepts

3.1.4. knowing where to find information is more important than knowing information

3.1.5. staying current is important. Accurate, up to date knowledge is key to connectivist learning

3.2. Constructivism

3.2.1. knowledge is constructed - learners build new knowledge upon what they already know

3.2.2. challenging projects that include students, teachers and other experts in the community

3.2.3. encourages students use things like experiments and real world problem solving to create new knowledge

3.2.4. changes students from being passive recipients to active participants in their learning

3.3. Cognitive Load

3.3.1. provide instruction so the learning that takes place in the short-term (working) memory can be moved into the long-term memory and then accessed when needed

3.3.2. it is helpful to "chunk" content, or break it into smaller, more meaningful parts

3.3.3. reduce the amount of information that is presented only for interest sake

3.3.4. create learning experiences that suit all learners. A person who is an expert in the topic may be bored, while the beginner may feel overloaded
