Chemical Bonds
by Charlotte McDonnold
1. Metallic Bonds
1.1. positively charged metallic ions surrounded by a cloud of electrons
1.2. outer-level electrons are not held tightly to the nucleus of an atom
1.2.1. electrons move freely among many positively charged ions
2. Nonmetal Bonds
2.1. metals are strongly attracted to the nucleus of the atom
2.2. when bonded with other nonmetals, atoms of nonmetals usually share electrons to form covalent compounds
3. Ionic Bonds
3.1. when metals combine with nonmetals
3.2. both metals and nonmetals become more chemically stable when they form ions
4. Covalent Bonds
4.1. diatomic molecule
4.1.1. consists of two atoms of the same element in a covalent bond
