Integrating Social Networking Tools into ESL Writing Classroom: Strengths and Weaknesses

1. Disadvantages
1.1. The relationship between teacher and students can be tricky.
1.2. It is time-consuming
1.3. Students will spare more time on playing computer games and chatting on-line
1.4. Writing tasks online will lead students to copy-paste, from online resources without thinking.
2. Results
2.1. Students do not often use SNSs in learning English.
2.2. Students with lower language skills could interact with others with less stress.
2.3. Using SNSs such as Facebook to teach ESL writing could trigger students’ creative thinking skills.
2.4. Topics related to students real life motivate them to write.
2.5. SNSs provide a better opportunity for interaction, planning and getting more information.
3. Methodology
3.1. Qualitative design
3.2. Through online discussion board
3.3. Participants: fifteen third-year TESL students in a state university in Malaysia
3.4. Instruments: three open ended questions (investigate teacher-trainees’ opinions about integrating SNSs into ESL writing classroom).
3.5. Data collection procedure: two weeks for answer the questions and interact with each other during this period.
