1. Social Structure & Family Life

1.1. Nile

1.1.1. The Pharaoh was on top of the Egyptian society, following him was his appointed govt. officials, priests, scribes, military leaders, land owners & doctors

1.1.2. The second level of the Egyptian society consisted of Artisans, craftsmen & merchants

1.1.3. 90% of Egyptian society were peasant farmers

1.1.4. The Egyptians were one of the first societies to start keeping slaves in the world

1.2. Huang He

1.2.1. Largely an agricultural society

1.2.2. Farmers called upon to fight in the army in times of war, & take part in constructing national projects, along side slaves

1.2.3. Many members of the Elite society hunted for sport & wealthier members collected expensive objects made by Brass & Jade

1.2.4. Most people in the society weren't Elite & were peasants & spent their time farming

2. Arts & Education

2.1. Nile

2.1.1. Painting and sculptures tended to be colorful and their subjects ranged widely

2.1.2. Used hieroglyphics as their writing system. It was one of the world's earliest writing system that used picture symbols to represent objects, sounds, and ideas

2.1.3. They had a unique style of drawing people's torsos as seen strait on, but their heads, arms and legs are drawn from the side.

2.1.4. Few children were educated, those who did were boys learning trades. Girls were taught how to raise children and maintain a household

2.2. Huang He

2.2.1. Their tombs were filled with beautiful crafts made of jade and bronze

2.2.2. Early Shang text used picture symbols. Their text has been found mainly on bone, questions where written on the bone for dead to answer

2.2.3. They were great at working with bronze, many of which were used in religious rituals

2.2.4. The Zhou learned how to use iron to make crafts and weaponry. This became the backbone of their economy

3. Economy & Trade

3.1. Nile

3.1.1. the Nile river allowed for a large trade rought along its banks

3.1.2. depended heavily on farming

3.1.3. the wemon spunn flax plants that the men grew into linens

3.1.4. A large amount of grain produced was used to create beer for trade

3.1.5. many people became specialized to create goodsthat were in demand

3.2. Huang He

3.2.1. may have created one of the world first money systems

3.2.2. river provided a rout for trade

3.2.3. one of their largest products was silk from the silk worm

3.2.4. iron was the backbone to their economy

4. Government & Leaders

4.1. Nile

4.1.1. Pharaoh was the leader of Egypt

4.1.2. Theocracy: a state ruled by religious figures

4.1.3. Bureaucracy: highly structured organization managed by officials elected by the Pharaoh

4.1.4. Highest govt. official under the Pharaoh was the Vizier

4.2. Huang He

4.2.1. Ruled by a Monarchy which is when one's family keeps power long & after one king dies a family member takes the throne

4.2.2. The king (whomever that may be) appointed governors to rule distant parts of the kingdom

4.2.3. When the Zhou took power, they introduced the belief that they ruled by the "mandate of heaven" to be accepted by the Chinese current society

4.2.4. The Zhou's used the "mandate of heaven" to explain the dynasty cycle, or rise & fall of dynasties in China, any dynasty that lost power the new govt claimed the old one had "Become corrupt"

4.2.5. The Pharaohs were thought to be gods, and were treated as so.

5. Religion

5.1. Nile

5.1.1. The God of the Sun was almost always a key figure in their religion, as was the God the protected the dead.

5.1.2. The Egyptians built temples and obelisks to honor gods and provide a home for them.

5.1.3. Egyptians worshiped many gods, and their religious beliefs were constantly evolving.

5.2. Huang He

5.2.1. Believed in the afterlife, and that a ruler would need his riches and servants after death.

5.2.2. Centered around ancestor worship.

5.2.3. Asked ancestors for advice using oracle bones during worship.

5.2.4. Sacrificed hundreds of prisoners of war with a leader.

6. Geography & Agriculture

6.1. Nile

6.1.1. used primitive irrigation systems

6.1.2. grew industrious plants such as papyrus and flax

6.1.3. largely grew grains such as wheat and barley

6.1.4. they relied on the annual flooding of the Nile to fertilize their soil.

6.2. Huang He

6.2.1. mountain ranges surrounding the river valley

6.2.2. Huang He river and many connecting tributaries created small fertile areas within the mountains

6.2.3. used primitive irrigation systems

6.2.4. fertile soil and temperate climate created good conditions to grow crops such as wheat, millet, rice, peaches......... etc.

6.2.5. domesticated the silk worm and farmed its silk

7. Science & Technology

7.1. Nile

7.1.1. The Egyptians understood basic arithmetic as well as basic geometry for building.

7.1.2. The pyramids were built with a good understanding of geometry as well as engineering.

7.1.3. The egyptions had their greatest advances in medicine, and had great knowledge of the human anatomy.

7.1.4. Doctors could heal wounds, set bones, gave hygiene tips, and even preformed surgery. They would make medicine from plants and animals to sure simple illnesses.

7.2. Huang He

7.2.1. Made great artifacts and advances using bronze.

7.2.2. They built huge, stable structures such as tombs.

7.2.3. Created a precise calender based on the cycles of the moon.

7.2.4. Zhou learned how to use iron for weapons.
