Planning for Student Enagement by Mind Map: Planning for Student Enagement

1. Presentation & Performance

1.1. Summary: Engagement is greater when students are creating work that has a wider audience. Whenever possible, have the students present and/or perform their work. Sometimes this can mean presenting or performing for the class, and at other times I want to find interested or relevant audiences that can witness and respond to student work.

1.2. Example: not sure how to include this with math, but maybe to other students, maybe bring in parents

2. Integrating Technology

2.1. Summary: You have to be smart and strategic about how you integrate technology into the classroom, it could allow students to make their work stronger and reach larger audiences. You want to make sure that when you use technology, it is for a clear purpose and helps achieve the goals above -- and your larger goal of increased engagement.

2.2. Example: Using Vernier technology to gather real life data

3. Authentic Learning

3.1. Summary: always have a rationale for learning content and a clear reason for doing the work that we do. In the past, I've had success designing projects that grapple with current issues

3.2. Example: giving the students "real life problems". Whether its finding the area of a picture they are going to hang on the wall or dealing with Americas debt. Giving them numbers that they can use in further real life situations

4. Inquiry

4.1. Summary: That learning is most powerful when it's a process of investigation and discovery

4.2. Example: giving them the supplies and guidance to discover that the pi= circumference/diameter
