What Is Technology by Mind Map: What Is Technology

1. What I thought it was before

1.1. Electronic Devices

1.1.1. Computers

1.1.2. Smart Phones

1.2. The Internet

1.2.1. Video Games

1.2.2. Social Media

1.2.2.1. Facebook

1.2.2.2. Instagram

1.2.2.3. Snapchat

1.3. Transportation

1.3.1. Electric Vechicles

1.3.2. Cars

1.3.3. Airplanes

1.3.4. Space Shuttles

2. Before I began reading anything in the module, I believed that technology was just new devices we used to make things faster for everyday convenience. I thought of technology as something that made difficult tasks more simple and less time consuming, giving us more time to complete other tasks in our day to day life. I saw technology as a tool to progress us as humans to places that were never even dreamt of in the past. Whether it's cutting the time it takes to communicate information or to send things from one place to another quickly, technology gives us that power to do so and keep on advancing as a society.

3. What I think it is Now

4. I now see technology as something that innovates rather than seeing it as the final product, like the electrical devices or the internet. Isman, A. (2012) says, "When people think of "technology,” they tend to think of human artifacts such as machines, electronic devices, scientific hardware, or industrial manufacturing systems. However, a formal definition (College Dictionary) of technology indicates that it has a more general meaning which includes any “practical application of knowledge” or “manner of accomplishing a task”. Now I think of technology as something that creates new things or improves what already exists. Technology is much more complex than I had thought before. Technology provides convenience but also safety, efficiency, creation, and life saving measures. Technology isn't confined to our cell phones or our laptops it is all around us. I now see technology as innovation, creation, and an improvement of what may already exist.

7. How my ideas have changed

7.1. I think of technology now as

7.1.1. Highway Systems

7.1.2. The Refrigerator

7.1.3. Fiber Optic cable

8. Electronic devices are not what defines technology for example smart phones or the internet as I thought before.

8.1. "Technology is usually comprehended in terms of hardware and the end experiences it produces (good or bad) or its material benefits (profitable or unprofitable) rather than understanding deeper relationships between technology, human nature, and culture." Isman, A. (2012) (p. 213)

8.2. “technology includes all tools, machines, utensils, weapons, instruments, housing, clothing, communicating and transporting devices and the skills by which we produce and use them.” Bain, R. (1937) (p. 860)

9. Why do we need new technologies?

9.1. We need new technologies so we as humans realize that there are so many problems occurring on our planet, and with that new technology we can battle these problems and come up with new ways to fix them. We need new technologies to improve the quality of life and make things work more efficiently and an example of this would be the Fiber optic cable. We need new technologies to fix major problems occurring in the world like global warming which would be a huge milestone for humanity. We need technology to make life better, to make our experiences safer and to advance farther than we ever thought possible.

10. "Technology is anything useful that a human mind makes." Kelly, K. ‌(2010)

11. "To a scientist, technology is the end product of one's research; to an engineer, it is a tool or process that can be employed to build better products or solve technical problems; to an attorney, it is intellectual property to be protected and guarded; to a business executive, it may be the most important, yet least understood company asset." Li-Hua, R. (2007)
