The Founding Of Modern Singapore by Mind Map: The Founding Of Modern Singapore

1. 1819 Treaty

1.1. Temenggong signed a treaty allowing the British to set up a trading settlement in the southern part of Singapore. In return, the Sultan would receive $5,000 a year and the Temenggong would receive $3,000 a year. Page 4.

1.2. So far the British and the Singaporeans have no problems.

1.3. They are all co-operating together, which is good because no one wants to have wars with each other

2. British Reaction to Dutch Monopoly of Trade

2.1. As the British also had trade relations with India and China, Penang served as a stopover point for British ships to take on supplies as they sailed from India to China. Page 6.

2.2. It seems like Britain has the money and most of the other countries have all the goods and supplies.

2.3. I would not really say that the British were stealing goods, but they were just making plans to get other countries supplies but still pay them.

3. Why Singapore was Chosen

3.1. Raffles believed that Singapore was the ideal place for the British to start a new trading settlement. Page 8

3.2. I think that Raffles chose Singapore was because it was a forgotten island.

3.3. The book also mentioned that not many people were living on Singapore.

3.4. This makes me think that the British were thinking of dominating Singapore.

3.5. To add to his delight, Raffle learned from some Orang Laut that there were no Dutch on the island(Singapore.) Page 8.

3.5.1. I think that Raffles was happy to hear that there were no Dutch on Singapore.

3.5.2. Also, the Dutch and British were going around the world trying to make a trading settlement with other countries. So if I were Sir Raffles hearing that there were no Dutch on Singapore, I would be really happy.

4. Singapore: A British Trading Settlement

4.1. He also told Raffles that only the Sultan could give the British permission to set up a trading settlement here. However, the Sultan was under control of the Dutch, and Raffles knew that the Dutch would not allow the British to occupy Singapore. Page 9.

4.2. Raffles is in a huge problem. The Dutch were controlling the Sultan.

4.3. All of Sir Raffles plans of occupying Singapore had been blown away. But the title is "A British Trading Settlement" so maybe the British and the Dutch will have a war with each other to see who gets Singapore.

4.4. This makes me think Singapore is like a piece of paper being pushed around by other countries.
