1. Ennis Del mar

1.1. High-arched nose and narrow face, scruffy and a little cave-chested, small torso long caliper legs. Muscular and supple body, made for the horse and fighting. (p.3)

1.2. Grew up in Sage, near the Utah line. Orphaned when his parents died in a car accident. Raised by his brother and sister. Tried to finish high school, but was unable to because he had no means of transport when his old car broke down. This forced him into ranch work. (p.1) The family place was lost at some point after which Ennis and his siblings were scattered. He was left to fend for himself by any hard work he could come by. (p.5)

1.3. In 1963, when he first met Jack Twist, he was engaged to Alma and was saving money for a small spread, hos savings at this point amounted to $10, and he was hungry for any job that could add to these savings. (p.2)

2. Jack Twist

2.1. Curly hair and a quick laugh. Carries some weight in the haunch and his smile disclosed buckteeth. Infatuated with the rodeo life. Tattered boots. (p. 3)

2.2. Grew up in Lightning Flat. (p.1) On a small ranch "A meagre little place [...] a porch stretched across the front of the tine brown stucco house, four rooms, two down, two up." (p.23) Raised by his father and mother. The father had been a well known bullrider, but had no interest in his son's endeavours. (p.5) His father was a hard man and he had no aversion to beating or humiliating his son. (p.24)
