1. How does chemistry affect our environment?

1.1. Pesticides

1.1.1. Pros: When pesticides are used, there can be less crop loss to bugs. This yields more food, more profit for the farmer, and less waste of land, time, farm equipment use and water for irrigation.

1.1.1.1. Some pests carry diseases, so eliminating them will help with our personal health.

1.1.1.2. Pests destroy plants and crops, but by eliminating them it will help the environment and the plants.

1.1.1.3. People in society will think it's easy to plant vegetables, flowers etc.

1.1.2. CONS: It's bad for the environment and health of humans and animals.

1.1.2.1. Water that contains pesticides runs off of agricultural areas and contaminates groundwater and the ocean affecting the health of humans and the environment.

1.1.2.2. There can also be health concerns to humans directly from the consumption of pesticide-containing produce and especially for the people spraying the crops with pesticides.

1.1.2.3. Society will always take the easy way out and use pesticides.

1.2. Wind Turbines

1.2.1. PROS: Helps with the environment and produces energy for people.

1.2.1.1. Wind Power does not generate "Pollution", or radioactive waste. It does not consume any of the non-renewable resources such as coal, natural gas, or oil. It is a renewable energy so it will help the environment.

1.2.1.2. Wind Power can generate enough energy for large numbers of people. By using larger turbines connected to an electrical grid it allows people the benefit of wind power without owning their own wind system

1.2.1.3. It is a "permanent energy". The wind will exist until the end of the sun. About 5 billion years. So it will continue on in the societies generations.

1.2.2. CONS: the reliability of wind. You cannot expect the "same amount" of wind power to be generated by your wind turbine.

1.2.2.1. Wildlife can be endangered. Birds, especially Migrating Birds, are known to try to fly between the running blades, and they get hit by the blades.

1.2.2.2. Some people don't like the design of wind turbines. Long steel bars, or many of them that make up Wind Farms as pictured here.

1.2.2.3. The wind turbines sound is similar to a small jet plane. It can disrupt others in the society.

2. How does chemistry affect our life at school?

2.1. Permanent markers

2.1.1. PROS: Efficient when getting your ideas down on paper.

2.1.1.1. Helps with making posters for protests to get you message across.

2.1.1.2. Easy to carry around

2.1.2. CONS: If you make a mistake it is unrecoverable.

2.1.2.1. Odor is very strong and can kill some brain cells if inhaled often.

2.1.2.2. Not recyclable, always ends up in land fills.

2.1.2.3. If made contact with the skin it can lead to skin poisoning or skin cancer.

2.2. Hand sanitizer

2.2.1. PROS: kills germs and bacteria

2.2.1.1. Easy to carry; you can put it in your backpack and use it when you need to.

2.2.1.2. Helps prevent students from getting sick.

2.2.2. CONS: kills healthy and unhealthy bacteria on skin

2.2.2.1. Some people may wash their hands less since they use hand sanitizer, creating more bacteria on their hands that carry through out the school, leading some students to get sick.

2.2.2.2. The bottles may be hard to recycle

2.2.2.3. Sanitizer will rub off on your food if you use it before you eat.

3. How does chemistry affect our daily life at home?

3.1. Antibacterial cleaning products

3.1.1. CONS: Using hand sanitizer or antibacterial soap can cause people to cut down on the amount of hand-washing they do. This can lead to an increase in bacteria and germs

3.1.1.1. Antibacterial soaps can kill both healthy and unhealthy types of bacteria on a person’s skin.

3.1.1.2. Antibacterial soaps can be more expensive than regular types of soap.

3.1.1.2.1. Since it is healthier, companies charge more, causing the society to choose the cheaper, yet worse option.

3.1.1.3. Not all the bottles used can be fully recycled.

3.1.2. PROS: Hand sanitizers are convenient to use when a person doesn't have access to soap and hot water. Antibacterial cleaning products are helpful for cleaning tasks in a veterinarian’s office and within a home with pets.

3.1.2.1. It's natural chemicals so it helps with weak immune systems; making it healthier for people.

3.1.2.1.1. helps people with weak immune systems from picking up bacteria that could worsen their condition.

3.1.2.2. Hand sanitizers are easy to carry, so when people use them less bacteria from the hands is placed around the society.

3.1.2.3. Have a natural scent that doesn't disrupt the environment.

3.2. Batteries

3.2.1. PROS: - Provides energy to all of the electronics at home+ work well in cold weather - have long shelf life - can withstand 400-1000 cycles with minumum capacity loss - relatively safe - can be stored discharged

3.2.1.1. Helps with the society because its an easy to carry energy source that doesn't take up space.

3.2.1.2. Some cars run on battery which is better for the environment because they pollute less. Reduces the need for fossil fuels like oil.

3.2.1.2.1. When burned, fossil fuels emit harmful chemicals into the atmosphere that erode the environment.

3.2.2. CONS: - has high self-discharge rate - very toxic inside and has to be recycled - can develop internal shorts (dendrites) over time

3.2.2.1. The chemical substances in batteries such as ( heavy metal, nickel etc.) which can cause severe impacts on humans health when they are dumped or discarded together with household waste.

3.2.2.1.1. Increases the toxicity levels in the landfills because of the heavy metal contained in the batteries.

3.2.2.2. Contain chemicals which will not break down easily. Can pollute water and earth if not disposed properly. This can impact the environment.

3.2.2.3. Encourages society to use more electronics.
