Assessing Knowledge Construction

Assessing knowledge construction has to take into account the learner and asses each one individually.  Jonassen suggests having the learner asses themselves and then the educator guide their assessment to ensure that correct learning is taking place. For assessing knowledge construction, he recommends rubrics such as observation and reflection, learner interactions, originality of interpretations, curiosity/interests/puzzlement, constructing mental models and making meaning.

Assessing Self-Regulation

For assessing self-regulation, Jonossen says self-regulated learners should set their own goals, determine their own activities, and regulate those activities in terms of the goals they have set. Rubrics for evaluating self regulated thinking are goal directedness, setting own goals, regulating own learning, learning how to learn, articulation if goals and focus of activity, and MindTools use in support of learning goals. 

Assessing Collaboration

Students who work together to negotiate their understanding will not only produce better models with MindTools, but they will also learn more in the process. Rubrics for evaluating collaboration are interaction among learners, interaction with people outside of the school, social negotiation, distribution of roles and responsibility.

Assessing Critical Thinking

  Critical thinking is difficult to assess. It is context dependent. Thinking critically in different subjects (math, science, history) and in different real world contexts engages different critical thinking skills or the same skills in different ways. Critical thinking skills are stable and not easily altered.
