I would also want to keep our friendship alive, and if I lied to him I would feel guilty and stop hanging out with him.

What I would do is I would go up to him at some point and just tell him the truth that I broke his phone. Then I would give him the brand new iPhone 6 Plus and he would be even happier because he would have gotten the new model.
