1.2. Another popular belief was Daoism which encourages people to retreat from the laws of society

1.3. Confucianism is the belief that all people should be treated humanely

1.4. Shang religion centered around the belief of worshipping their ancestors

2. Social Structures and Family Life

2.1. Sumerians

2.1.1. Priests, kings, and their principle agents were at the top of the social structure

2.1.2. Next were large land owners and wealthy merchants

2.1.3. Below them were the majority of Sumerians- artisans, farmers, and laborers.

2.1.4. At the very bottom were slaves, who were normally captured in battle

2.1.5. Men in the community would work for the law and help political power while the women would stay home and take care of the children and home

2.2.1. They first started farming crops 9,000 years ago

2.2.2. Shang China was largly an agricultural society

2.2.3. Most people was extra time for leisure activities

3.2.3. People spent most of their time in the fields farming

6.2.1. The history of education in China began with the birth of Chinese civilizations

6.2.2. The nobles set up educational establishments for their children

6.2.3. The different schools were often organized into political groups to gain social influence

7. Science and Technology

7.1. Sumerians

7.1.1. Invented the wheel, used for making pottery and building a variety of vehicles

7.1.2. Invented the plow

7.1.3. Learned to use bronze to make stronger tools and weapons

8.2.2. Legend does tell of a great ruler named Fu Xi who brought civilizations to the earliest people of the region

8.2.3. Shang kings were surrounded by a court, who performed rituals in order to strengthen their kingdom

8.2.4. The king ordered governors to control far parts of the kingdom for safety
