4. Modern History
4.1. 1980's Civil War between the military led government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front.
4.1.1. The Civil war lasted for over twelve years, and saw extreme violence from both sides. Including terrorizing and targeting civilians by death squads, the recruitment of child soldiers, and other violations of human rights, mostly by the United States backed military.
4.1.1.1. In 1990, the UN began peace negotiations and on January 16, 1992 The Chapultepec Peace Agreement, was signed by the combatants in Mexico City ending the conflict.
4.1.1.1.1. After speaking out against U.S. military support for the government of El Salvador, and calling for soldiers to disobey orders to fire on innocent civilians, Archbishop Oscar Romero was shot dead while celebrating Mass at the small chapel of the cancer hospital where he lived.
5. Travel and Tourist Attractions
5.1. Inglesia El Rosario is one of the most visited tourist attractions. It is a church with a rainbow stained glass window and is considered to be very unique.
5.1.1. Parque National El Boqueron is a national park very close to San Salvador. It is considered a must see because tourists are able to see into the crater of a volcano.
5.1.2. Lake Coatepeque is a volcanic lake located Northwest from San Salvador.
5.1.2.1. Hospital Divina Providencia Chapel is a hospital and a chapel where the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero took place.
5.1.2.2. Puerta Del Diablo (Devil's Door) is a peak located South East of San Salvador. It was sacred to the Mayan people because it was a sacred sitee for scrifice rituals.
