Heartland is a realistic portrayal of a Singaporean boy’s search for identity. Do you agree?

No, it is not realistic

not as many feelings as normal people

Wings emotions are often subdued and the other characters emotions are very hard to figure out

Yes, it is realistic

its not just always good things happening

Wing loses touch with his close friends

Despite being portrayed as a good friend and a nice person, he does not have any "happy endings", with both of his relationships not working out.

all the stages of a boy's life

Wing goes through school , NS and many different but relevant things

Conflict

Wing experiences conflict like in real life , with Audrey and Chloe

Key words & ideas

search for identity

Wing goes to NS and mixes around with different people too but realises that social status and identity matter alot

Singaporean

what it means to defend you country through NS

Realistic

Wing is made out to be a real boy in the very real world , and it made to be realistic

Analysis

It is realistic as there is the use of conflicts , all the stages in a boy's life and tragedy . They are used to portray how things really unfold and not to sugarcoat anything . This proves that it is realistic even though there are some unrealistic points .

It is realisitc as it portrays the "ups and downs" an ordinary Singaporean teenager would experience. It is to show that life is never easy going and to show the cruel side of life.

Example

All Singaporean males have to go for NS once they are 18

Wing in the story is no different from any other Singaporean male and has to serve NS at 18.

The importance of social status in Singapore

Wing and Chloe have very different social status. Wing is a person who spent all his life in the heartlands while Chloe has a higher social status than him. They broke up because of the difference in status.

Life is not always predictable

Wing has always thought that his father had died many years ago and has already accepted that fact. But he suddenly finds out that the father that hs thought had died many years ago might be his fifth uncle.
