Heartland is a realistic portrayal of a Singaporean boy’s search for identity. Do you agree?

Yes, it is realistic

It show an average boy(Wing) living in the heartlands. It also shows how he goes through National Service(NS) and his problems faced when having relationships. Whatever he faces is what all guys in Singapore will have to go through. eg. it shows the example of what friends are, helping friends when they are in need. Thus it is realistic to me. -Kevin

No, it is not realistic

It is not realistic as it is based on how ppl lived in the 1990s, and it is already 2010 now. Thus, it does not potray the current life of singaporean boys. The boys living in the 1990s and 2010 differ in their mindset, boys nowadays have dreams of their own and are not easily contented with an ordinary life. As it is somewhat different from how life is now, I conclude that it is not realistic. -Ashleigh

Yes, it is realistic

The book tells us about the life of the people living in the heartlands. We face most of the problems that the people in the book face. For example, everyone will have to face relationship or friendship problems, National Service and solve some of the problems in life like what it is stated in the book, therefore it is realistic. -Wen Hui
