Daily Life In Ancient Rome

1. Law And Order

1.1. Roman laws were very strict, crime was common Rome. So Romans tried to protect themselves against crime.

1.2. Any Roman even the poor could accuse someone for a crime.

1.3. Romans believed that one law should be applied to all citizens even though Roman laws were not applied equally

2. Daily Life

2.1. In the city’s Forum, or public gathering place, wealthy Roman women shopped for goods, accompanied by their slaves.

2.2. People and goods flowed into Rome from the four corners of the empire. As in Wealthy Roman Instruments

2.3. The empire had many large cities, but most people lived in the countryside.

3. Religion

3.1. Romans adopted to Greek gods

3.2. Romans always tried to please the Gods because they believed that they controlled their everyday lives.

3.3. Festivals or Holidays/Holy days were held throughout the year to honer the gods. Religion was part of everyday life in Rome.

4. Family Life

4.1. Families were ruled by the father of the family.

4.2. When a baby was 9 days old he/she received a good luck charm that they wear around their neck throughout their childhood.

4.3. Roman men were supposed to provide for their family.

5. Food And Drink

5.1. What Romans cook depends on weather their rich or poor.

5.2. They ate bread, beans, spices, a few vegetables, cheeses, and meats. They drank plain water or hot water with herbs and honey.

5.3. Poor Romans might have chunks of fish along with some asparagus and a fig for dessert.

6. Housing

6.1. housing was very different in Rome for the rich and for the poor.

6.2. Wealthy Romans lived in grand houses, built of stone and marble.

6.3. The apartments were cramped, noisy, and dirty

7. Education

7.1. Most poor children in Rome were sent to work instead of to school.

7.2. They used a pointed pen, called a stylus, to copy down lessons on small, wax-covered wooden boards.

7.3. Boys became soldiers, doctors, politicians, or lawyers. Girls became dentists, doctors,real estate agents, or tutors.

8.1. Wealthy Romans had a lot of leisure, because slaves did the work.

8.2. Roman emperors made sure to give the poor Food and Entertainment.

8.3. Romans watched gladiators fight in large public arenas.

9.1. Wealthy Romans often owned country estates with large homes that were called villas.

9.2. When they went to the country, wealthy estate owners checked up on how their farms were being managed.

9.3. Lots of people in the countryside were nit slaves, But their lives were very hard.
