Behavior Of Waves
by Rocio Ruiz Lopez
1. Reflection
1.1. Book Def: Occurs when a wave bounces off a surface that it cannot pass through.
1.2. My Def: When a wave is not able to pass through a surface so it bounces it.
1.3. Example: Mirror
2. Refraction
2.1. Book Def: The bending of waves it enters a new medium at an angle.
2.2. My Def: When waves bend at an angle due to anew medium.
2.3. Example: Ocean Waves
3. Diffraction
3.1. Book Def: The bending of a wave as it moves around an obstacle or passes through a narrow opening.
3.2. My Def: When waves refract to move around an obstacle or ass through a narrow opening.
3.3. Example: Water moving around a rock.
4. Interference
4.1. Book Def: Occurs when two or more waves overlap and combine together.
4.2. My Def: When two or more waves meet and form one wave.
4.3. Example: Two water waves from different streams flow out into a river.
5. Constructive Interference
5.1. Book Def: Occurs when two or more waves combine to produce a wave with larger displacement.
5.2. My Def: When two or more waves meet and come together to make a wave with larger displacement.
5.3. Example: A mom pushing her kid on the swing with right timing making the kid swing higher.
6. Destructive Interference
6.1. Book Def: Occurs when two or more waves combine to produce a wave with smaller displacement.
6.2. My Def: When two or more waves meet and come together to make a wave with smaller displacement.
6.3. Example: Mother has bad timing on pushing her kid on the swing, so the kid will not wing as high.
7. Standing Wave
7.1. Book Def: A wave that appears to stay in one place-it does not seem to move through the medium.
7.2. My Def: A wave that doesn't look to be traveling through the medium.
7.3. Example: Two people shaking either end of a jump rope.
8. Resonance
8.1. Book Def: The response of a standing wave to another wave of the same frequency.
8.2. My Def: The reply of a standing wave to another with the same frequency.
8.3. Example: Piano
