Forces and Structures
by Edward Zhao
1. Center Of Gravity
1.1. Is the place where both sides have the same amount of weight
1.1.1. ruler
1.1.2. textbook
2. Types of Structures
2.1. Combination- They have solid, shell, and frame parts
2.1.1. dome stadium
2.1.2. tunnel
2.2. Frame-Uses a network, or skeleton of materials that support each other
2.2.1. skeleton
2.2.2. goalies net
2.3. Shell-has a hollow, curved shape.
2.3.1. Dome
2.3.2. helmet
2.4. Solid-uses solid construction materials to support loads
2.4.1. Bridge
2.4.2. concrete dam
3. Loads
3.1. Dead-Caused by the force of gravity acting on the structure itself.
3.2. Live-Caused by gravity, but can vary.
3.3. Dynamic-Caused by other forces
4. External Forces
4.1. A force that acts on structures.
4.1.1. Point of application-The place to contact the filling cabinet to apply the force.
4.1.2. Plane of application-An imaginary flat surface that the force passed though
5. Form and Function
5.1. Form-The basic shape of the structure.
5.1.1. CN tower
5.1.2. house
5.2. Function- The job that the structure does.
5.2.1. watch
5.2.2. flashlight
6. Internal Forces
6.1. A force act within a structure.
6.1.1. Tension- An internal force that pulls an object apart.
6.1.2. Compression-An internal force that presses an object together.
6.1.3. Torsion-An act when the object is twisted.
6.1.4. Shear-An internal force when an object is pull apart in two directions.
