MY FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION ✌ by Mind Map: MY FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION ✌

1. PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

1.1. Realism

1.1.1. Aristotle realism philosophy evolved from Plato's idealism philosophy. Realism is a philosophy where the setting of classroom would be where the teacher teaches and students take notes, do worksheet, homework, etc. My major is math so teaching the students without much verbal discussion would be the normal but I don't want to just lecture because I know how it feels to be lectured and not not learn anything. I do want to interact with my students and help them learn and enjoy math.

1.1.2. The Role of the Teacher

1.1.2.1. A Realistic classroom is mostly where the teacher leads and everything is structured. Discipline is key when it come to a classroom like this.

1.1.3. The Goal

1.1.3.1. The goal of a realistic classroom is to students get ready for the real world

1.1.4. Method of Instruction and Curriculum

1.1.4.1. This kind of classroom is lectured based with question and answer but also includes assessments. Aristotle believed that education should consist of the three R's and including math, science, music, history, p.e., literature and play.

2. SCHOOLS AS ORGANIZATIONS

2.1. Nature of Teacher and Professionalization

2.1.1. Teachers are expected to be a nurturer, colleague, friend, facilitator of the learner, researcher, program developer, administrator, decision maker, professional learner, community activist, caring, empathetic, well-rounded person that can act as a role model to students, parents, and other professionals.

2.1.2. Highly qualified teachers must have a college degree, full certificate or license and pass certain tests

2.1.3. Expected to perform miracles but little respect given and a salary that does not measure up to what they do.

2.1.4. Argued that teaching is partially professionalized.

2.1.5. Good teachers are creative and can change a boring subject into an exciting one.

3. EDUCATIONAL INEQUALITY

4. EDUCATIONAL REFORM

5. SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

5.1. Theoretical Perspective

5.1.1. Interactional Theories- This theory is basically to understand people through action instead of through studying the mind through tests. Compared to the Conflict and Functional theory, it is considered macrosociological.

5.1.2. Functional Theories- This theory would be considered an interdependence theory. Interdependence is where one part of the society depends on another part to function.

5.1.3. I chose these two theories because I agree with them the most. I believe that tests do not tell you completely about someone and that people do not learn completely through word of mouth. Interaction and "do it yourself" contributes to learning the most. The functional theory is agreeable because as a society we all depend on each other to make it in this society.

5.2. There are three effects of schools on individuals that I think have the greatest Impact on students: Employment, Student Peer Groups and Alienation, and Education and Inequality.

5.2.1. My Reasons

5.2.1.1. Employent- Most employment that will lead to a greater life comes from higher eduaction. In todays society you have to a certain degree to be considered stupid. Employees look at how many degrees you have to see how qualified you may be. I believe education is very important but not everybody is college material. Some people learn by doing and teaching themselves.

5.2.1.2. Student Peer Groups and Alienation- Sometimes the environment a student lives in can suggest what kind of future that child may have as an adult. In high school there were many different groups and depending on what group you were in depended on how you were treated. I believe as teachers we should not categorize students, but treat them like they are all important because they are.

5.2.1.3. Education and Inequality- In this society, the upper class usually get the better education, health, jobs, live in better homes and etc. The reality is that it shouldn't matter what class you are but in this society it does. People pre judge others because of certain things when they have no clue who you are. No one should be able to move up in the society just because their family has a few million more than you or because of your looks or where you live, etc.

6. POLITICS OF EDUCATION

6.1. Liberal

6.1.1. I agree a lot with the Liberal view. More money should be given to schools especially lower income schools. All students should be given the same opportunities. This view also believes that students should learn not only learn the basic curriculum but also about life and to be more prepared for the world. The liberal view is more about the intellectual purpose of schooling.

6.2. Proggresive

6.2.1. The progressive view is about learning new things and changing for the better. I would agree with this view of education because I believe that change is good when done right. I would choose progressive over traditional because just because something is traditional doesn't always make it right. As the book says that the progressive view is as a upward mobility and to me that is where education shoul;d continue and always be.

6.3. My veiw

6.3.1. I agree with both the liberal and progressive view the most. The way that I was brought up and my background are the reasons why I relate to these perspectives.

7. HISTORY OF U.S. EDUCATION

7.1. Public

7.1.1. Public schooling I agree with the most. for one thing i am a product of public schooling. In public schooling you get the advanced education compared to being at home and learning mostly what your parents know. Education in public schools grow everyday. Also most students in public schooling get better opportunities in life.

7.1.2. Utilitarian- an idea of education through Ben Franklin. He believed in the ability that people could better themselves through education. this system of education included math, accounting, biology, language (Greek, Latin), history, political science, and geography. I agree with the fact that students would be well rounded for their future.

7.1.3. Committee of Ten- this idea of education has the same curriculum of the Utilitarian but for the high school level. this curriculum was to prepare students for the duties of life.

7.2. The history of the United States education is very interesting. Education has come a long way from the 1600s with the start of Harvard University to desegregation to President Obama's Race to the top. Education is and will forever be changing.

7.2.1. Education is very important and there is no way around it. Although we have had schools since the beginning of time, no education is perfect. As the text says "....schools are imperfect institutions with conflicting goals that have been the center of struggle throughout our history. There have been no easy answers to the complex questions examined.".

8. CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY

8.1. My pedagogic choice would be both the Mimetic tradition and the transformative tradition. As a math teacher I would have to be more on the mimetic side to transfer the information to the students. I believe that the transformative tradition should be a goal for every teacher as well because we should not only want to teach a subject but also help change that student for the better in some way.

8.2. My curriculum theory of choice would have to be social meliorist theory and also the social efficiency theory. The social meriolist theory is shaping students to become better in life and succeed so that they can help make the world better. The social efficiency theory would be helping students prepare for the real world and being out on their own.

8.3. The curriculum approach of my choice would be the sociology of curriculum

8.3.1. This view has both formal and informal curriculum. the formal is what is to be taught in the classroom. The informal is the messages and rules that are left of the lesson. Teachers are not there only to teach a subject but to also help mold students for a better future.

8.4. State Superintendent- Tommy Bice

8.5. Local Superintendent-Edwin Nichols Jr.

8.6. State Senator- Arthur Orr

8.7. Local School Board Michelle King

8.8. Representative on State School Board- Cynthia Sanders McCarty

8.9. House of Representative- Spencer Brachus

9. EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY
