1. Politics of Education

1.1. Conservative

1.1.1. Was developed by William Graham Sumner, that looks at social evoultion as a process.

1.1.2. This perspective states that the strongest survive, and looks at the idea that human evolution is the result of adaptation to changes in the enviroment.

1.1.3. I chose this political view becuase it reminds me that this is how our society works. It may not be the most desired but so many people result to this idea. I want to be able to help my students understand that they are all strong and equip them with the tools they need to embrace change and be successful in that change.

1.1.4. Views the idea that schools understand that all students are individuals and that they should be viewed as such. It also views the role of the school as crucial to economic and social stability and success.

1.2. Traditonal

1.2.1. Tend to view Schools as necessary to the transmission of teh traditional values of U.S. society as hard work, family, unity, individual inititative, and so on...

1.2.2. Schools should pass on the best of what they know to be in the past and the best of what is in the present. This allows the students to view what happened in the past to equip them with the tools to ensure that they have a choice in where their education and choices can lead.

2. History of U.S. Education

2.1. Reform Movement- Traditional

2.1.1. Believed that knowledge-centered education, subject-centered curriculum, teacher-centered education,. discipline and authority, and the defense of academic standards in the name of excellence.

2.1.2. I believe in this reform due to the fact that I believe that education should be offered to everyone, but also believe that the comprehension of that education should be earned. I don't believe that grades should just be handed out or that a student should be able to put no effort into his or her schooling and still be granted with a stamp that says they mastered all of the given content.

2.1.3. Focuses on the idea that education is a process that has to be worked towards and that it is a goal that should be achieved by all students.

2.2. Historic Interpretation- Conservative Perspective

2.2.1. Focuses on the idea that curriculum has become watered down over the decades.

2.2.2. Believes that U.S. schools have become focused on valuing skills over content.

2.2.3. Diane Ravitch touched on the idea of the Conservative Perspective, but played into part that she had a liking and understanding of both the radical-revisionist and the democratic-liberal perspectives. I loved that she did this and related to her stance, because I too see positive and negative attributes in all three perspectives.
