1. Moving Native Americans

1.1. The "Five Civilized Tribes" were the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw.

1.1.1. The tribes established farming societies with successful economies.

1.2. Native Americans were living in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.

1.2.1. Settlers wanted the federal government to relocate Native Americans to west of the Mississippi river.

1.2.2. To relocate is to, force a person or group of people to move.

2. The Cherokee Nation

2.1. The Cherokee refused to give up their land. In supreme court, Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that Georgia had no right to interfere with the Cherokee.

2.2. President Jackson had supported Georgia's efforts to remove the Cherokee and ignored the Supreme Court's ruling.

3. Indian Removal Act

3.1. The act allowed the federal government to pay Native Americans to move west.

3.2. The act was passed in 1830 by Andrew Jackson.

3.3. In 1834 Congress created the Indian Territory, for Native Americans from the Southeast.

4. The Trail of Tears

4.1. The Cherokee wrote a letter of protest to the Government and people of the United States.

4.2. In 1838 General Winfield Scott lead an army to remove the Cherokee from their land with force if they refused again.

4.3. The Trail of Tears is the road where many tears were shed by the Cherokee people while they made their way west.

5. Native American Resistance

5.1. The Sauk cheifian, Black Hawk led a force of Sauk and Fox people back to Illinois, their home land. Illinois responded with force chasing, and killing most of the people off the land and into present day Iowa.

5.2. The Seminole people of Florida were the only Native Americans to successfully resist their removal.Osceola was the chief; he and some of his people refused to leave again when pressured in the early 1830's. They went to war with the U.S. instead.

5.2.1. The U.S gave up once more than 1,500 American soldiers had died by the year 1842.

5.2.2. The Five Civilized Tribes were relocated in the Eastern half of present day Oklahoma.

6. Native American Resistance

6.1. In 1832 the Sauk chieftan, Black Hawk, led a force of Sauk and Fox people back to Illinois their homeland. Illinois didn't like this and reacted with violence killing many people.
